Sandakan
You'll arrive in Sandakan and get settled at the Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort. Later this afternoon there's a group briefing with your leader, and if time permits you can join an optional night walk before dinner.

Sandakan
This morning head to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to watch orphaned and rescued orangutans during feeding time. Afterward, the Rainforest Discovery Centre has a canopy walkway where you'll spot hornbills and possibly orangutans if it's fruiting season.

Sepilok to Kinabatangan
After breakfast you'll drive two to three hours to the Kinabatangan River, Borneo's third-longest river. This afternoon and evening take a river cruise as it gets dark, looking for pygmy elephants, wild orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys and various bird species.

Kinabatangan
Start early with a dawn river cruise hunting for wildlife. Following breakfast, you can either walk nature trails or visit a nearby Orang Sungai village to learn about the indigenous community. Return to the river this afternoon for crocodiles and forest animals, with an optional night walk to spot owls or Western tarsiers.

Kinabatangan to Sandakan
After breakfast drive about two and a half hours back to Sandakan, stopping at the War Memorial along the way. Once you check into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to relax by the pool, try local food or walk through Sandakan's compact streets.

Sandakan to Kuala Lumpur
Following breakfast transfer to the airport and fly to Kuala Lumpur on the Malaysian Peninsula. Your new leader meets you there and you'll take a two-hour drive to Malacca, arriving at your hotel in the afternoon with time to settle in.

Malacca
Spend the day exploring Malacca's well-preserved colonial architecture from Portuguese, British and Dutch periods. Walk through the Chinatown area with antique shops and temples, then try some colourful trishaws. That evening have Baba Nyonya cuisine, which blends Chinese, Malay and other influences.

Malacca to Kuala Lumpur
Transfer about three hours to Batu Caves, limestone formations that form a holy Hindu site with a large statue of Lord Murugan. You'll climb 272 steps and see plenty of monkeys around the caves. Then continue to Kuala Lumpur where the afternoon is free to visit Petronas Towers, shop or relax. Later catch drinks at a rooftop bar with city views.

Kuala Lumpur
Begin with an orientation walk of Kuala Lumpur followed by a food tour through Malay, Indian and Chinese culinary traditions. You'll start at Masjid Jamek and visit historic temples, try noodles in Chinatown, then head to Little India in Brickfields for Indian food and colourful streets. The afternoon is free to explore further, shop or visit KL Tower.

Take a four-hour train ride north to Butterworth, then cross the bridge by transfer to Penang island and Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once you arrive, there's a late afternoon orientation tour to get your bearings.

Penang
Walk through Georgetown on a city tour seeing colonial structures, ornate temples and colourful street art, finishing at the Khoo Clan House and Museum. The afternoon is yours to explore further by climbing Penang Hill, visiting the Botanical Gardens or stopping at the restored Eastern and Oriental Hotel for tea.

The morning is free for a final look around Georgetown before you head to the airport for a short flight to Langkawi, an archipelago of nearly 100 tropical islands in the turquoise Andaman Sea. After checking into your hotel, spend the rest of the day relaxing at your own pace.
