- Day 1
Bangkok
You'll arrive in Bangkok whenever works for you. There's nothing scheduled until the welcome meeting at 18:00, so use the time to get settled, grab a meal, or wander around the city on your own. This gives you a chance to adjust to the heat and get your bearings before meeting the group.

Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Start your day with a 1-hour longtail boat tour through Bangkok's klongs, the network of canals that wind through the city. After that, you'll get a guided tour at Wat Po, the famous temple with the reclining Buddha. Then you've got free time to check out the Grand Palace, do some shopping, or walk around Khao San Road before catching the overnight train to Chiang Mai at 12:00.

Chiang Mai
The train pulls in early morning, and you'll have the afternoon free to explore Chiang Mai however you like. If you're interested, there's an optional Northern Thai cooking class you can sign up for in advance, or check out the night market on your own. Later in the day, head to the temple complex at Doi Suthep for a guided tour where you might hear monks chanting.

Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong
Today's a drive north to Chiang Khong, a small trading town sitting right on the Mekong River. Along the way, you'll stop at Wat Rong Khun, the distinctive white temple, then spend time at the local food market or just relax and take in the views across the river toward Laos.

Chiang Khong to Laos
Cross into Laos at the border and hop on a songthaew to reach the slow boat. From there, you'll travel down the Mekong at a relaxed pace, passing villages, tropical jungle, and mountains. By evening, you'll arrive at a village homestay where you'll have dinner and spend time with your host family.

Mekong River to Luang Prabang
Spend most of the day back on the slow boat traveling downriver. Before reaching Luang Prabang, you'll make a stop at the Pak Ou caves. After exploring, you'll reboard and continue to Luang Prabang, pulling in during the early evening.

Luang Prabang
Get a guided tour of the Ethnology Museum to learn about local dress and customs, then visit Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre to see Laotian textiles and handicrafts. Later, head out on a half-day trip to Kuang Si waterfalls, so bring your swimsuit if you want to swim. You'll also have a meal with the local Baan Ou community.

Early this morning, catch a high-speed train from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. Once you arrive, the afternoon is free to rest up or start checking out the town.

Vang Vieng to Vientiane
Head out of the mountains toward Vientiane, which has a reputation as one of Asia's quietest capital cities. Wander at your own pace, checking out temples like Wat Sisaket or Wat Phra That Luang, walk through the morning market which actually stays open all day, or explore whatever else catches your interest.

Hanoi
Spend your morning visiting Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace, and his former stilt house to learn about this central figure in Vietnamese history. Later, catch a water puppet performance, which is a traditional art form here, then eat dinner at one of Hanoi's great restaurants.
