Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Joshua Tree National Park

    You'll head straight into Joshua Tree National Park to see the twisted Joshua trees and various cacti up close. There's a chance to spot jackrabbits and bighorn sheep as you ride through the landscape. If you're up for it, an optional climb gives you extra elevation and views of the Salton Sea. You'll settle in for two nights at either the Campbell House Inn, a 1925 homestead, or 29 Palms Inn.

  2. Day 2

    Joshua Tree National Park

    This is a relatively easy day hike starting from Jumbo Rocks. You'll pass by Skull Rock, Face Rock, and Split Rock formations, then explore desert washes looking for animal tracks. Along the way, check out various cacti and desert plants, and take your time for photos. The afternoon is open so you can explore 29 Palms or hang out by the pool before dinner.

  3. Day 3

    Joshua Tree to Borrego Springs

    You're back in Joshua Tree exploring the south end this time. Walk through one of the region's most prolific cholla cactus gardens and see some of the largest palm trees here. Keep an eye out for desert tortoises and wildflowers as you descend through scenic Box Canyon toward Mecca. After observing the Coachella Valley's irrigated agriculture and the Salton Sea, you'll shuttle about an hour to Borrego Valley. Check in at Borrego Springs Resort and Spa or Borrego Valley Inn for two nights.

  4. Day 4

    Borrego Springs

    Borrego Springs is a small artsy town with 3,500 residents, surrounded by a State Park with lots of history. You'll do a couple of short hikes to get familiar with the area. The Slot is a small siltstone canyon with interesting rock formations to explore. Then head to Borrego Palm Canyon oasis where you'll hear palm leaves rustling and watch for desert bighorn sheep. You'll stay another night at your resort.

    Borrego Springs to Palm Springs

    You'll cycle through Borrego Springs with steep desert mountains to the west and colorful badlands to the east. The valley has fascinating sculptures by artist Ricardo Breceda scattered around. Choose between a tougher hillier route with better views or stick to flatter valley roads to spend more time looking at the sculptures. After your ride, shuttle about 1.5 hours to Palm Springs and grab a date milkshake before checking into Best Western Plus Las Brisas.

The area is famous for Rat Pack era celebrities, so you'll see retro mid-century modern architecture, sports cars, boutique shops, and cafes. Stop by Elvis' honeymoon hideaway and the larger-than-life Marilyn Monroe sculpture. After lunch, it's time to head back to reality.
