Just be prepared for long bus drives if you start from Helsinki (there is an option to start from Rovaniemi to avoid this just check with the operator). Asked on June 23rd, 2025My question is about our returning flight. The latest flight I can find leaves Helsinki at 11:20am. You suggested we have 4 hours before leaving but no planes leave after that time. My daughter teaches school and has to be back in the classroom on Jan. 6th so we need to be home on Jan. 5th. Do you think we can make the 11:20am flight out on Jan. 5th?
TimetravelsOperator•Written June 2025We recommend to book your flight at least 4 hours after the estimated arrival time. This is to prevent delay caused by bad weather, driving can be challenging in the north and there is usually only one road. If you wish to play safe, there is another option: we could drop you off in Rovaniemi on the 4th in the evening. The bus is planning to arrive there at 20:30. There are two options from there: Plane with two departures at 21:45 and 22:40 with Finnair, or Train that arrives at 9:15 the next morning.

Included are: Transportation, Accommodation (3 nights in shared cottage with sauna), Professional guidance, Activities like Husky safari, Ice fishing, Sauna, Icehotel visit, Abisko hike, Rovaniemi Santa Claus Village visit, Snowshoe Hike, Reindeer meet, Day trip to Tromsø, Stop in Kiruna. Some meals are also included: Breakfast, Dinner in Kilpisjärvi, Lunch in Abisko National Park.

At that time of the year the daylight is quite short, usually from 10:00 in the morning to 14:00 in the afternoon. Then, it means that when it's dark, you could observe northern lights! The main criteria for it are: darkness and low clouds covering. The accommodations in which you will stay are in the middle of the nature, so it is possible that you could see auroras from your accommodation or from an area nearby. Of course, your guide will help you to know where is the best spot and how to check the forecast. To summarise, there is no need to worry about auroras, you'll have plenty of time and chances to see them! Of course, I would keep in mind that this a natural phenomenon that we cannot control.

About the activities, you don't have to worry, they are all safe. As much for you as for your children! Indeed, they are all about walk, swim, visit, and meet with animals. It is unlikely that your accommodation will be shared. Indeed, the ones we usually use are for 2 to 4 people, so perfect for your family!

About your way back from Rovaniemi Railway station, I recommend you to book your train including a bit of delay. Usually we recommend 4 hours after the estimated arrival time. Indeed, we would like to prevent any bad driving conditions for example.

You will be staying in two different places: 3 nights in Kilpijärvi, Finnish Lapland and, 2 nights in Björkliden, Swedish Lapland. During your whole stay, the accommodation will be shared cottages. If you wish to enjoy one night more in Lapland before the trip starts, I recommend you to fly to Rovaniemi and the bus can pick you up on the way north. Sadly, as our trips are packages, we don't provide extra night services. However, if you wish to stay in Rovaniemi, there is a good amount of choices there.

Our Grand Lapland tours are typically organised in two different departures - during the month of December and March. However, the exact offer with dates and availability to book will be programmed only approximately half a year before the trip. For now, I can not provide more details about these tours. We always plan our tours one season ahead only, as we are mostly focusing on the current season. If you are interested in our tours in 2027, please come back to check the offer during 2026.
