Itinerary
- Day 1
Oslo to Bygdin
Your adventure begins with an 8:30 am bus departure from Oslo heading to Bygdin. Once there, you'll board the MB Bitihorn, a historic boat from 1912, for a scenic ride into the mountains toward Eidsbugarden. Your host Solbjerg will take you to Vinjebue, the old cabin where famous Norwegian poet Aasmund Clavson Vinje once lived, and share stories about his life and connection to Jotunheimen.

Bygdin to Torfinnsbu
You'll hike most of the day alongside Lake Bygdin, a body of water named after an Old Norwegian word meaning 'bend' and you'll see exactly why once you spot its distinctive boomerang shape. The route goes over a hill and down to Torfinnsbu, though if weather turns poor or you prefer an easier start, a boat option covers this section. After arriving at Torfinnsbu, you'll prepare your own meals using groceries from a store visit, so plan what you need for dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches.

Torfinnsbu to Gjendine
This day takes you trekking through Svartdalen valley with 2000-meter peaks and glaciers surrounding you on all sides. The hike is challenging with rocky terrain, so wear sturdy boots and bring trekking poles. The steep descent at the end can get slippery when wet, so take your time getting down to Gjendine bue, one of DNT's oldest huts. Your host will tell you about the farmers who lived here back in the early 1900s.

Gjendine to Memurubu
Start by hiking along Lake Gjende, then climb steeply up an exposed section to reach the ridge. From the top, you'll have wide views across the mountains and down to the lake below. From there, you descend steeply into Memurudalen, walking the same routes that milkmaids and farmers from Lom and Végé once used when driving cattle, sheep, and goats over the mountains at Bukkelzegret. You'll finish at Memurubu for the night.

Memurubu to Besseggen
Today you walk one of Norway's most famous hikes on Besseggen ridge, the legendary location from Henrik Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt'. The narrow, airy ridge offers spectacular views with the green waters of Lake Gjende dropping 400 meters below on one side and the deep blue Bessvatnet lake stretching on the other, with Jotunheimen's majestic peaks framing the entire scene.
