Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Tunis

    Your staff meets you at the airport and helps with luggage before driving you to the hotel. Once you're settled in, they'll brief you on the local area and what's coming up tomorrow. The afternoon and evening are open, so if you land early enough, take a wander through the historic medina or stroll down Avenue Habib Bourguiba to get a feel for the city.

  2. Day 2

    Tunis

    After hotel breakfast, you'll walk through Tunis's UNESCO medina with a guide, checking out the winding streets, hidden souks, and artisan workshops. Next comes an authentic cooking class where you'll shop for ingredients at a local market with a chef, then prepare lunch together in a traditional home using centuries-old techniques. By afternoon, head to the ancient Carthage ruins to learn about its role as a major Phoenician and Roman center. Finish the day in Sidi Bou Said, a white-washed village with blue doors and Mediterranean views.

    Tunis to Kairouan to Tozeur

    After breakfast, drive south to Kairouan, a UNESCO site and one of Tunisia's most spiritual cities. You'll see the Great Mosque of Okba Ibn Nafaa with its vast courtyard, then wander the old medina's narrow alleys, checking out traditional souks and artisan shops. Stop at the Aghlabid Basins, ancient water reservoirs showing off Aghlabid engineering. Then head across the changing landscape to the desert oasis of Tozeur for the night.

  4. Day 4

    Tozeur

    After breakfast, hop in a 4x4 for an adventure to the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Midès in the Atlas foothills. You'll hike through canyons and palm groves, spotting hidden waterfalls and ancient Berber villages carved into rock. Later, explore Tozeur's oasis (one of Tunisia's largest) and see the irrigation systems keeping thousands of date palms alive. Walk through the old quarter to see the geometric patterns of local clay bricks before heading back to your hotel to wind down.

    Tozeur to Douz

    After breakfast, drive across the Chott el-Jerid salt lake with its shimmering white surface stretching to the horizon. Stop for photos of this surreal landscape, then continue to Douz, known as the 'Gateway to the Sahara.' Browse the local souk for crafts, textiles, and spices, and you might see nomadic M'razig tribesmen in traditional dress. Check in to your hotel for the night.

    Douz to Matmata to Sfax

    After breakfast, drive to Matmata, a Berber village with a lunar landscape and underground troglodyte houses. Tour one of these cool, subterranean homes to see how families have lived there for centuries. Visit Hotel Sidi Driss, famous as Luke Skywalker's home location in the original Star Wars film. Continue to the coastal city of Sfax and walk through its historic medina, exploring its gates, vibrant market, traditional workshops, and impressive ramparts before checking in for the night.

    Total Solar Eclipse Viewing

    Drive south from Sfax to Chaffar Beach for viewing the total solar eclipse of 2027 on August 2. The partial eclipse starts in the morning, with totality at about 10:11 AM local time, giving you 5 minutes and 39 seconds of total darkness. The viewing site has shaded areas, refreshments, and restroom facilities. After the eclipse, you'll have free time to relax or explore the local area before returning to Sfax for the evening.

    After breakfast, head to El Jem to see the Amphitheatre of El Jem, a UNESCO site and the third-largest Roman amphitheatre ever built. Explore its three levels of arches and corridors where gladiators once prepared, imagining the spectacles that happened there. Drive back to Tunis through the Tunisian countryside, then check in at your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, relax or head out to revisit a favorite spot or discover somewhere new.

    A marvelous way to be immersed in the life and culture and experience of being in Morocco. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were always there just as we needed help. The route is well planned, the stops (features and hotels and meals) were all well chosen.
