You'll arrive in Thusis at your own pace and take time to settle in. Get your gear sorted and mentally prepare for the hiking adventure that starts tomorrow. This is more of an arrival and acclimation day, so relax, grab dinner somewhere local, and get a good night's sleep before hitting the trails.

Along the way, you'll pass under the Solis viaduct and make a stop at the 8th-century St. Peters church in Mistail. Coming down involves 860 m of descent, so pace yourself and bring plenty of water.

    Albula River to Bergün

This 6-hour, 21 km hike focuses on the famous Landwasser viaduct, one of the main highlights of your trip. You'll walk the Wasserweg ansaina trail alongside the Albula river where it froths through the valley, giving plenty of chances to photograph the iconic RhB Rhaetian Railway viaduct. After that, cut through Filisur's old village streets, pass by the dancing witches sculpture at Bellaluna, and end up at the historic railway station in Stugl before finishing in Bergün. The hike includes 915 m of ascent and 415 m of descent, with Bergün known for its distinctive Engadin-style houses.

You'll pass Preda and see the clear waters of Palpuogna lake before heading to Weissenstein Alp or Crap Alv. The route climbs to Fuorcla Crap Alv at 2,466 m, then drops steeply down into Val Bever to reach Spinas. After that, catch a train to St. Moritz. The day covers 18 km with 1,035 m ascent and 530 m descent through terrain that shows off a century of bold railway engineering.

A 4.5-hour, 17 km hike takes you through moorland and Alpine pastures toward Berninapass. Start by walking through Stazerwald forest, then reach Pontresina and explore the Morteratsch glacier area. You'll cross the watershed between Lago Bianco and Lej Nair, catching views of Piz Bernina, Grisons' highest mountain. Later, climb to the viewpoint at Sassal Mason where you see Piz Palü and its glacier, the heart-shaped Lagh da Palü, Alp Grüm, and Val Poschiavo spreading out below. 6. Day 6

    Berninapass to Poschiavo

This is a shorter day at 3 hours and 10 km, but worth the effort to see the glacial mills at Cavaglia. These natural formations were made accessible through considerable work over the years. The hiking trail winds down the slope the way the Rhaetian Railway does, eventually reaching the Poschiavo valley floor. You'll descend 1,070 m with no climbing, so it's mostly downhill and easier on the legs after previous days.

The massive curved Brusio viaduct dominates this 4.5-hour, 20 km route as you hike into Italy. The path winds through orchards, chestnut groves, and vineyards offering completely different scenery from the high Alpine sections. You'll make a stop at S. Perpetua in Tirano to take in views of the Mediterranean landscape and the town's historic palazzi. Only 200 m of ascent but 780 m of descent as you continue into warmer, lower terrain.
