- Day 1
Cairns to Cape Tribulation
You'll start by heading into the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest. A cable ferry crosses the Daintree River and gets you to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest actually meets the reef. The 4WD Bloomfield Track is pretty rugged, and you'll cross the Bloomfield River near Wujal Wujal before stopping at the legendary Lion's Den Hotel. Black Mountain appears as you approach Cooktown for the night.

- Day 2
Cooktown to Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park
This morning heads west into the outback toward Rinyirru, also known as Lakefield National Park. It's one of Queensland's largest wilderness areas, and you'll see massive billabongs covered entirely in waterlilies. The bird life here is incredible, so bring binoculars and patience for spotting everything from jabirus to sea eagles throughout the day.

Rinyirru to Weipa
Travel through outback country to reach the historic gold town of Coen, then continue on to Weipa. This small town grew around bauxite mining operations and sits on the Gulf of Carpentaria. By evening, you'll catch the sunsets here, which paint the sky and water in shades of orange and red over the gulf.

Weipa
Morning gives you a choice between two activities in Weipa. Either join a wildlife and eco cruise around the harbour and up the Embley River to Hay Point, or take a bauxite mine tour to learn how the operation works and hear about Indigenous culture in the area. After lunch and your chosen activity, head to Bramwell Station, Australia's northernmost former cattle station, for the night.

Weipa to Cape York
Start early and follow the Old Telegraph Track heading north toward Fruit Bat Falls. You'll stop there for lunch and get a chance to swim in a crocodile-free waterhole to cool off. After that, cross the Jardine River and continue south toward Cape York, getting close to the northern tip of mainland Australia by evening.

Cape York
You're at the very top of mainland Australia at Cape York, just a few hundred kilometres from Papua New Guinea. Visit Somerset, the long-abandoned settlement that Frank Jardine founded back in 1864. Old ruins, cannons, and tombstones still remain from that era. Lunch happens on Anchorage Beach, which has palm trees and overlooks Albany Passage.

Thursday Island to Cairns
Thursday Island is your stop this morning, the capital of the Torres Strait Islands and a place full of Aboriginal culture and history. After a guided tour of the island, head to Horn Island to board your flight back to Cairns. The flight path takes you over the Great Barrier Reef, giving you one last view of the reef from above.
