Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Tromso

You'll arrive in Tromso, sitting on an island just north of the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. If your flight gets in early, take some time to walk through the local galleries or catch a boat ride around the island to get oriented. At 6 pm, head to your hotel for a welcome meeting where you'll connect with your local leader and the rest of your group. After that, everyone heads out for dinner together to try Norwegian cuisine and start getting to know each other.

    Optional Activities

    • Visit Tromso Museum

The 42-kilometre route cuts through the Arctic wilderness with views of fjords, mountains and waterfalls the whole way. Once you arrive at the historic mountain lodge in Abisko National Park, you'll be tired from the travel day, so dinner is hearty Swedish food followed by an early bedtime to recharge.

You'll walk past mossy walls in Abisko Canyon, stop at Marmorbrottet, a marble quarry from the 1800s, and take a break at Lake Njakajaure where red-throated divers or Arctic terns might show up. The return crosses mountain heaths dotted with wildflowers. Since it's the Midnight Sun season, there's no pressure to rush back. Lunch happens along the way, and you can fit in an optional afternoon hike if you're up for it.

In the afternoon, you'll catch a train to Gallivare, a small town in Sapmi, the ancestral homeland of the Sami people. The train stops several times to break up the journey, including a photo stop at the Arctic Circle marker. Watch the scenery shift from thick pine forests to open wetlands, rivers and small Swedish villages as you head south. You'll arrive in Vilhelmina with time to explore the town or grab a meal at a local spot known for smoked fish and game meats.

You'll learn how the Sami connect with nature, settlement life and reindeer herding practices. Lunch is traditional, featuring deer meat, vegetables and bread. Then you're back on the Inlandsbanan train heading to Ostersund with a stop in the remote town of Sorsele. You'll arrive late, so plan on resting up for the day ahead.

It was a lovely trip with a fun group and an excellent leader in Dushan. The itinerary was well planned and the accommodation was ok and I suspect being on the classic.
