  1. Day 1

    Brisbane

    You'll arrive in Brisbane and board the Spirit of the Outback train, settling into your sleeper cabin as Queensland's landscapes roll past. The welcome dinner happens in the Tuckerbox Restaurant, where they serve local produce and genuine Outback hospitality.

  2. Day 2

    Longreach

    Breakfast and lunch come to you onboard the Spirit of the Outback as you pull into Longreach late in the afternoon. From there, it's a transfer to Mitchell Grass Retreat, a luxury property spread across the Mitchell Grass Plains. You'll check into your eco-tent with its own ensuite and private deck, then head to the sunset deck for dinner with that Outback feel.

    Longreach

    Start early with the Drover's Breakfast Cruise on the M.V. Longreach Explorer along the Thomson River. You'll see Iningai Scar Trees and learn the story of how Longreach got its name. Later, walk through the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame museum and Qantas Founders Museum on your own. By evening, you're on the Silver-Tails Sunset Rail Journey with canapes and drinks while the Outback sun sets.

    This morning you head southwest from Longreach through the Barcoo Shire and Channel Country's striking terrain. Arriving late afternoon at Toogunna Plains Farmstay, a 132,000-acre working sheep and cattle station, you check into your deluxe cabin with views across the open plains. After settling in, sunset canapes at Kyra Sandhills come with drinks, then back at the homestead garden you'll have dinner featuring the property's own produce.

    After a hearty home-cooked breakfast, you join a guided tour of the station visiting abandoned homesteads, old oil fields and shearing sheds from early settler days. Early afternoon you head to Eromanga Natural History Museum, home to Australia's largest dinosaur. A guided tour takes you through their working fossil laboratory with expert guides. That evening brings Tastes of the Outback dinner with drinks and canapes on the gallery pavilion, then a five-course degustation inside the museum gallery.

    Eromanga to Roma

    Leaving Toogunna Plains, you stop at the Outback Date Farm near Quilpie to see how dates grow in the dry climate and taste their homemade date loaf. Next you check out Charleville's Bilby Experience with its guided tour of the nocturnal house and conservation center. The drive continues along the Adventure Way to Roma where you check in and have a relaxed dinner at your accommodation.

Travel out to Mount Abundance for a scenic picnic lunch with sweeping views and local stories. You'll see native wildlife like wedge-tailed eagles and black-striped wallabies if you're lucky. Late afternoon brings a guided tour at Western Queensland Spirit, the region's first craft distillery, then a farewell dinner celebrating Outback Queensland's flavours and stories.

    The actual tour was excellent and the experience with Tour Radar was very professional. However, the pre-trip logistics and organization associated with APT was uniformly very poor. Although Tour Radar was efficient at communicating with APT, there was no evidence that APT listened. Indeed, although the actual tour in the Bungle Bungle was great, I would not go on another APT trip again.
