Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech to Boumalne Dades

Heading out from Marrakech, you'll drive into the High Atlas Mountains and pass through the scenic Tizi n'Tichka Pass where the landscape shifts to dramatic peaks and traditional Berber settlements. You'll make a stop in Skoura to visit a historic kasbah like Kasbah Amridil, then continue toward Kalaat M'Gouna in the Valley of Roses where you can see how local rose oil gets produced. By late afternoon, you'll arrive in Boumalne Dades with those striking red cliffs of the Dades Gorge right there beneath you.

    Boumalne Dades to Merzouga

After breakfast, you'll travel through the Dades Valley past dramatic rock formations and old kasbahs until you reach Todra Gorges. There you'll walk along the canyon floor with narrow walls and cliffs rising over 300 meters on either side. From there, you head through Tinghir, an oasis town with palm groves surrounding it, then continue east to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon, you'll board a camel for a sunset ride across the sand, then settle in at a private desert camp for a traditional Berber meal under the stars with live music.

  3. Day 3

    Merzouga to Ait Ben Haddou

Waking early, you'll watch the sunrise light up the golden dunes before having breakfast and leaving the desert behind. You'll travel west through Alnif and Tazzarine, passing rocky plateaus and desert villages, then drive through the Draa Valley with its palms and kasbahs lining the landscape. Reaching Ouarzazate, you can check out the film studios and Kasbah Taourirt if you're interested in that part of Morocco's movie history. After that, you head to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for a guided walk through its earthen alleys, towers, and terraces. The night is spent in a nearby guesthouse.

In the morning, you'll take one final walk through Ait Ben Haddou to photograph its mudbrick towers and get those panoramic views from different angles. Then you begin the drive back to Marrakech, climbing through the High Atlas Mountains and crossing the Tizi n'Tichka Pass with stops for photos along the way. As you approach Marrakech, you'll notice the landscape changes from desert to greener valleys, and you'll arrive back by late afternoon.

Our New Year’s Eve in the Sahara was simply magical! Watching the sunset over the dunes, dining under the stars, and celebrating around the campfire with music and drums felt like something out of a dream. It was the most unique New Year’s we’ve ever had!
