    You'll arrive in Munich and get settled at your hotel. Spend the rest of the day walking around this historic Bavarian capital. It's a good chance to get your bearings and find a spot for dinner in the old town area.

  2. Day 2

    Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle

    Head out on a day trip from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle, which sits on a rugged hill in the Bavarian Alps foothills. You'll explore the castle's ornate halls and rooms, and the views from up there are really something. The whole trip takes up most of your day, so plan to return to Munich by evening.

    Munich to Nuremberg

    Nuremberg to Mainz

    Following breakfast, you're heading from Nuremberg to Mainz. You'll board your river cruise ship there and start sailing along the Rhine. This marks the beginning of your river journey, so get comfortable on the ship and explore its amenities. Dinner will likely be on board as you begin traveling downriver.

    Rüdesheim am Rhein

    This morning includes a hike through vineyards up to Niederwalddenkmal, a monument overlooking the Rhine Valley that was built in the late 1800s to commemorate German Unification. Later in the afternoon, you'll visit Schloss Johannisberg Winery in the Rheingau region. The winery offers nice views and has been producing Riesling for centuries. You'll likely return to the ship by evening.

You'll see the remains of old city baths and the Porta Nigra, which is the best-preserved Roman city gate you'll find north of the Alps. The ruins really give you a sense of how important this place was under Roman rule.
