- Day 1
Arrival in Beijing
You'll arrive and get transferred to your hotel, then head out to Wangfujing Street in the early evening. This pedestrian avenue has plenty of shops and restaurants where you can grab your first taste of Beijing's food scene. Dinner is included, and you'll return to rest at your hotel.

Beijing
Start with a cable car up the Great Wall at Mutianyu, taking in the mountain views along the way. After coming back down, head to the 798 Art District, a converted factory space now filled with contemporary art. Later you'll see the Temple of Heaven, then get a foot massage and Tai Chi class in the afternoon. End with a traditional lacquered duck dinner.

Beijing
This is a full day hitting Beijing's main landmarks. Begin at the Forbidden City where 24 emperors once ruled, then go to Jingshan Park to get views from Coal Hill (if weather cooperates). Walk through Tiananmen Square and check out the Beijing Opera House before lunch. In the afternoon, head to the Summer Palace with its gardens and lakes, then take a tricycle through the Hutong neighborhoods, visit traditional shops, and see a Siheyuan courtyard house. Back to your hotel for the night.

Beijing to Nanjing
After breakfast, you'll head to the train station and board one of China's high-speed trains going 300 km/h. The nearly 1,000 km journey to Nanjing takes just under four hours. Once there, visit Purple Mountain to see the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and the Linggu Temple, a quiet Buddhist site. You'll have free time to explore this city of eight million people before settling in for the night.

Nanjing to Shanghai via Suzhou and Tongli
Travel to Suzhou to see its classical gardens, starting with the Garden of the Humble Administrator, the largest in the city with winding paths and tranquil ponds. Spend free time on Pingjiang Road, a historic street with canals and traditional teahouses. After lunch, head to Tongli water town for narrow canals and stone bridges, then take a boat ride through the waterways before moving on to Shanghai for the night.

Explore Shanghai starting in Pudong with its modern skyscrapers and the Pearl Tower. Take a ferry across the Shanghai River to see both sides of the city. Visit Yuyuan Garden, a preserved Ming Dynasty space, and do a traditional tea ceremony. Wander through Xintiandi's boutiques and cafés after lunch, then check out Tianzifang with its alleys and art galleries. Walk along The Bund to see the colonial buildings, and you'll have a free afternoon with an optional night boat trip available.
