      Beijing Arrival & Evening Exploration

      Land at Beijing Capital International Airport and take the Airport Express train to the city center for ¥25. It's a better option than taxis during rush hour. Spend your evening walking through the vibrant Dongcheng district. Important: Get WeChat and a VPN before you arrive since most Western apps don't work in China.

      Beijing's Historic Heart

      Start your day at Tiananmen Square around 7:30 AM before the crowds arrive. Head to Jingshan Park for excellent views of the Forbidden City. Later, explore the traditional hutongs around Nanluoguxiang. Wear good walking shoes you'll walk 5-6 miles on uneven ground.

      Great Wall & Overnight Train

      Visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. It's less busy than Badaling and the views are better. Take the early bus to get more time at the wall. Bring your own lunch to avoid the overpriced tourist restaurants. At night, take the overnight train to Xi'an. Book a top bunk if you want more privacy at a lower price.

      Xi'an's Warriors & Muslim Quarter

      Go straight to the Terracotta Warriors when you arrive. Take bus 914 from the station for ¥7 instead of expensive transfers. In the evening, check out the food stalls in the Muslim Quarter. Try Yang Rou Pao Mo but ask them to go light on the oil if you're not used to rich food.

      Xi'an to Chengdu

      Start with Xi'an's City Wall if you like. You can rent a bike for ¥45 to ride the 14km wall circuit. Take the afternoon bullet train to Chengdu. Get to the station 90 minutes early for passport checks. End your day with Sichuan hotpot but be ready for serious heat.
