- Day 1
Reykjavik
You'll land at Reykjavik International Airport and catch a shuttle bus into the city center. Your first day gives you time to get oriented and see what interests you most. The 18 geothermal swimming pools are popular if you want to relax and warm up after your flight. Otherwise, walk around and check out the local boutiques and museums at your own pace. If you're feeling energetic, you can arrange a whale watching tour, though it's optional depending on how you're feeling after travel.

Reykjavik to Lake Myvatn
After breakfast, head to Reykjavik Domestic Airport and take an internal flight north to Akureyri. Pick up your rental car and drive toward Lake Myvatn. Along the way, you might stop at Akureyri's Botanic Garden if plants interest you, or detour to see Godafoss waterfall, which sits right off the main route. When you reach your hotel at the lake, you'll have guided walks available ranging from 3km to 15km depending on your energy level and preferences.

- Day 3
Lake Myvatn
Today you've got several options around Lake Myvatn and the surrounding area. Try one of the guided walks (ranging 3km to 15km with varying difficulty levels), or check out Hverfjall Crater and soak in the warm waters at Myvatn Nature Baths. If you want something different, head to Asbyrgi canyon in Vatnajokull National Park, or drive to see Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls nearby. Husavik, known as Iceland's whale watching hub, is also within reach if you want to try spotting marine life from the water.

Lake Myvatn to Borgafjordur Eystri
Drive to Borgafjordur Eystri, making a stop at Studlagil Canyon to see the distinctive basalt columns and turquoise glacial water. Once you reach this remote area, you'll find it's home to thousands of Atlantic Puffins. The puffin nesting sites have shelters and wooden platforms set up for viewing. Around 10,000 pairs nest here between mid-April and mid-August, so timing matters if puffins are a priority for your trip.

Borgafjordur Eystri
You'll choose which walk appeals to you in this isolated part of Iceland. The Brunavik trail covers varying distances and takes you between fjords and mountains with views stretching across Eastern Iceland. Alternatively, Hvannagil Canyon Loop, sometimes called the Golden Valley, features colorful rhyolite rock formations and dramatic scenery. After your walk, spend the afternoon exploring more trails or head to Puffin Harbour if you haven't seen enough puffins yet.

Borgafjordur Eystri
Explore Storurd, a hiking area tucked beneath the Dyrfjoll peaks that's still relatively unknown compared to other Icelandic spots. The valley floor is covered with massive boulders dropped by glaciers around 10,000 years ago. You can do the Storurd Circular walk (17.5km) or the shorter Out and Back route (11.5km), depending on how much time and energy you have available.

Borgafjordur Eystri to Reykjavik
Depending on when your flight departs, spend your morning walking around Borgafjordur Eystri one more time. Then drive to Egilsstadir Airport, which takes about an hour. Return your rental car and fly back to Reykjavik. By evening, you'll be back in the capital for your final night. Use it to visit museums you missed earlier, check out galleries, try some restaurants, or just walk around since Reykjavik is the northernmost capital city in the world.
