Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Fes to Merzouga

Your driver picks you up early from your Fes accommodation and you head south through Imouzzer toward Ifrane, which has this distinctive alpine-style architecture you don't typically see in Morocco. From there you'll drive into the Cedar Forest where you can get close to the Barbary Macaques and actually feed them if you'd like. After grabbing lunch in Midelt, the route takes you through Tizi-n-Tilghmt Pass and along the scenic Ziz Valley. By evening you'll reach Merzouga in the Sahara Desert, where you'll do a camel trek to catch the sunset, then settle in for the night at a luxury desert camp.

    Merzouga

This morning you'll wake early to watch the desert sunrise from where you're staying. After breakfast, you'll ride your camel back toward Merzouga, exploring the sand dunes along the way and checking out the wild lakes and fossil areas. You'll visit an old eyeliner mine and spend time at local nomads' traditional tents where you can have Berber tea. Later you'll head to Khamlia Village for traditional Gnawa music and dance performances, then walk through the palm groves and visit Merzouga Lake, which locals call Flamingo Lake. You'll have dinner and sleep at a hotel tonight rather than the desert camp.

From there it's on to Erfoud, where you can check out fossilized marble workshops and see how artisans work with the stone. The drive through palm groves brings you to the Todra Gorges, where towering red cliffs rise dramatically and climbers often work routes in the canyon. After lunch you'll drive through the Skoura palm groves and visit the historic Kasbah of Amridil, a well-preserved fortified structure.
