Bristol to Tenby
You'll leave Bristol and drive toward South Wales, first stopping in St David's, which holds the distinction of being Britain's smallest city. There's a 12th-century cathedral worth checking out while you're there. After that, the drive along the Pembrokeshire coast gives you flexibility to stop wherever interests you, so if you spot ancient woodlands, estuaries, or valleys that catch your eye, you can pull over and explore. By evening you'll arrive in Tenby for the night.

Tenby to Abergavenny
This morning you have free time to walk around Tenby and see the 9th-century town itself, including the ruined castle. Next, you'll head to Laugharne where poet Dylan Thomas once lived in a boathouse, and you can check that out. From there, Carreg Cennen Castle sits on a rocky outcrop and makes for a good stop. Later in the day you'll drive through Bannau Brycheiniog National Park with its mountain scenery before reaching Abergavenny.

Abergavenny to Bristol
Start your day in Hay-on-Wye, a place known for its second-hand and antiquarian bookshops, so if you enjoy browsing used books this is the spot. Then you'll head to Ross-on-Wye, a charming market town where you can grab lunch and wander through shops and pubs. In the afternoon, drive through the Wye Valley and stop at Tintern Abbey, a 12th-century ruin sitting right on the River Wye. Before heading back to Bristol, you'll visit Chepstow's Norman castle remains.
