The route crosses Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower, then drops into Barranco Valley with its alpine climate and distinctive vegetation. After around 6 hours of hiking, you'll reach Barranco Camp.

If conditions allow, you'll catch sunrise from the rim. Another hour of hiking brings you to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point. After time at the summit, you'll descend back to Barafu Camp to rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp at 3100 meters.
