Arrival in Ecuador

Quito
Start by walking through Quito's colonial center with a guide, hitting Plaza Grande and checking out La Compañía and La Basílica churches. Then head to Mitad del Mundo to stand right on the equator line with a foot in each hemisphere. After that, you'll visit a few museums like the Planetarium and Ethnographic Museum, and catch a cocktail demonstration at the Artisanal Beer Museum.

Otavalo and Imbabura Province
You're traveling about 90 kilometers north to Otavalo, which has one of the largest indigenous markets in Latin America. Spend time browsing Plaza de los Ponchos and Mercado Centenario for textiles, ponchos, jewelry, and instruments. Later, you can check out other spots in Imbabura province like the Quitsato sundial, Imbabura Volcano views, Peguche Waterfall, a boat ride on Cuicocha Lagoon, or San Pablo Lake depending on your interests.

- Day 4
Cotopaxi National Park
Get an early start for a horseback ride through Cotopaxi National Park. You'll climb around 1,000 meters while riding like the local chagra cowboys, passing through Andean mountain terrain. On the way up, you'll see a lagoon with Cotopaxi peak in the distance. Watch for wild horses, rabbits, birds, and deer along the trail.

Avenue of Waterfalls
Drive south from Bañós along the Avenue of Waterfalls, following the Pastaza River through the valley. You'll pass numerous waterfalls along the route before reaching Rio Verde. Stop to see El Pailón del Diablo waterfall, which is the main attraction on this stretch.

Chimborazo
Travel through the highlands to Chimborazo, a snow-capped mountain reaching 20,564 feet (6,268 meters). You'll walk at high altitude here, experiencing what's sometimes called the closest point to the sun because of its unique position relative to Earth's center.

Ingapirca Ruins
After breakfast, you'll walk through the páramo landscape and follow the ancient Inca Trail. Then check out the Ingapirca ruins, which are the most important pre-Incan ruins in Ecuador. Take a short hike to reach the Inca's Face.

Quito to Cuenca
Eat breakfast early, then private transportation takes you to Quito Airport for a 50-minute flight to Cuenca. Once you arrive, meet your guide for a three to four hour city tour. Walk through the UNESCO old town center and head to Turi for views overlooking the city.

El Cajas National Park to Guayaquil
Spend the day at El Cajas National Park, which has about 200 glacial lakes and trails throughout. You'll hike through moorland with your guide explaining the vegetation. As you work toward one of Ecuador's highest points, the landscape shifts and you'll see rice plantations before arriving in Guayaquil for a city tour.

Departure
