Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw

You'll kick off your motorcycle adventure from Luang Prabang, heading out on dirt roads that follow the Nam Saung River all the way to Paxeng. This part of the ride gives you a feel for the terrain you're working with. From Paxeng, the real challenge begins with a steep mountain climb that takes you up along ridges with views across the Lao landscape spreading out below. After that section, you'll transition onto tar roads heading toward Viang Kham, where you can stop for traditional Lao food and refuel. Then it's onward to Nong Khiaw, a quieter riverside town positioned between limestone cliffs. You'll spend the night at a riverside hotel there, so you can rest up before the next day's ride.

Lunch (Traditional Lao food in Viang Kham)

  2. Day 2

    Nong Khiaw to Luang Namtha

Starting from Nong Khiaw, you head out through the Lao countryside on tar roads, making your way toward Oudomxay province where the roads get hillier and more winding. You'll pass through local villages along the way, stopping to interact with people you meet and grabbing something to eat. The ride takes you through afternoon hours as you make your way to Luang Namtha, the largest city in northwest Laos and a major crossing point between Laos and China. You'll pull in during late afternoon and settle into a local guesthouse for the night.

    Meals
Lunch (Quick bite in local village)

    Included Activities

    • Motorcycle ride from Nong Khiaw through Oudomxay province to Luang Namtha

  3. Day 3

    Luang Namtha to Pakbeng

This day you're going off the main roads, taking your motorcycle off-road from Luang Namtha heading toward Pakbeng. It's a tougher ride but worth it because you'll reach remote villages and towns that don't see many outside visitors. Along the way, you'll encounter people from different ethnic groups living in these areas, which gives the day a different character from the previous rides. By the time you reach Pakbeng, you'll be ready for a comfortable lodge that's within easy walking distance of the Mekong River, so you can take in that setting once you've settled in.

    Included Activities

    • Off-road motorcycle ride from Luang Namtha to Pakbeng
    • Visit local ethnic villages
    Landmarks/POIs
    Pakbeng
    Mekong River
  4. Day 4

    Pakbeng to Luang Prabang

You'll leave Pakbeng early in the morning and ride through scenic mountain terrain heading toward Hongsa, a village known for its two busy markets packed with fresh local food and goods. From there, the route takes you on high mountain roads that wind through remote settlements, passing through areas where Khmu and Hmong ethnic groups live. The final leg brings you back toward Luang Prabang, and you'll end your four-day tour with a ferry crossing over the Mekong River as you come back into Luang Prabang in the evening, completing the loop.

    Included Activities

    • Motorcycle ride from Pakbeng to Hongsa
    • Visit Hongsa village markets

I did the Laos Motorcycle Tour from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng in Apr 2024, and it was an unforgettable experience! The mountain views were absolutely stunning, and riding through the winding roads was a real thrill. Our guide was super friendly and made sure we were always comfortable. We stopped at some great local spots along the way, which really added to the trip. If you're into adventure and beautiful scenery, I highly recommend this tour!
