Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw

Your motorcycle journey starts in Luang Prabang and heads north toward Nong Khiaw on a mix of dirt and asphalt roads. You'll take a ferry across the Mekong River, then check out Pak Ou caves where thousands of Buddha sculptures line the cave walls. The route passes through Ban Nagnan where you can stop and watch locals working with silk, seeing both the weaving and dying process firsthand. By evening you'll settle in either with a local family for authentic Lao home cooking or grab a guesthouse room in Nong Khiaw itself.

  2. Day 2

    Nong Khiaw to Luang Namtha

Today you're riding through the Lao countryside on tar roads heading toward Oudomxay, which sits in mountainous terrain with some really nice stretches of road. Along the way you'll pull into a local village to grab lunch and talk with people there, getting a feel for daily life in the area. From there the route continues on to Luang Namtha where you'll arrive in the late afternoon. You'll stay the night at a local guesthouse to rest up before the next leg.

  3. Day 3

    Luang Namtha to Pakbeng

This is where things get more challenging as you take the motorcycle off-road from Luang Namtha heading toward Pakbeng. The route takes you through remote villages and towns that don't see many tourists passing through, and you'll have chances to interact with people from different ethnic groups along the way. Riding conditions are tougher but the scenery and isolation make it worthwhile. You'll reach Pakbeng and check into a comfortable lodge that's within walking distance of the Mekong River.

The route continues through Hongsa toward Sayabouly on winding dirt roads cutting through countryside. When you arrive in Sayabouly you'll have a fresh Lao meal waiting and then settle in at the Elephant Conservation Centre for the night, which gives you a great location for what comes next.

After that you'll visit their medical centre to learn how they rescue and treat animals. Later you leave Sayabouly and cross the Mekong River, then ride through Muang Nan, a quiet village where locals are welcoming and friendly. The last stretch takes you back toward Luang Prabang on dusty roads that run along the Mekong with several river crossings along the way, and you'll roll in to Luang Prabang by late afternoon wrapping up your five-day adventure.

I did the Laos Motorcycle Tour from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng in Apr 2024, and it was an unforgettable experience! The mountain views were absolutely stunning, and riding through the winding roads was a real thrill. Our guide was super friendly and made sure we were always comfortable. We stopped at some great local spots along the way, which really added to the trip. If you're into adventure and beautiful scenery, I highly recommend this tour!
