Miranda do Douro
You'll get picked up at the airport and head to Miranda do Douro, which sits at the far eastern edge of Portugal. Along the drive, you'll see the Douro River Canyon with its dramatic cliffs that rise over 200 metres on either side. Once you arrive, there's time to walk through the medieval walls and get a feel for the town, where locals still speak the Mirandês language, a language unique to this small region.

Miranda do Douro to Douro International Nature Reserve
Your cycling kicks off today with a 42 km ride toward the Douro International Nature Reserve. The landscape here is full of wildlife and over 170 bird species, so you might catch sight of golden eagles, Egyptian vultures, wild boar, goats, and if you're lucky, an Iberian wolf crossing the pristine plateau.

Douro International Nature Reserve to Torre de Moncorvo
Today covers 38 km on an old railway line that's been converted into an eco-trail, so you'll cycle through fields, woods, and cherry trees on your way to Torre de Moncorvo. This town is known for its Almond Blossom Festival, and it has the Iron Museum where you can check out the area's Roman mining history and see geological and archaeological finds. You'll stay in an elegant townhouse where your host might offer homemade liqueurs made with local almonds.

Torre de Moncorvo to Vila Flor
This 38 km stage follows the Douro River with almond tree-lined tracks and about 7 km on a safe paved road. You'll cycle through olive groves and cherry orchards, then stop at an olive mill in Vila Flor for a picnic lunch and a chance to taste local cheeses and Alheiras sausage. The night ends at a historic farmhouse surrounded by old wine and oil production buildings.

Vila Flor to Sabrosa
You'll cycle 29-32 km through the UNESCO terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, seeing landscapes shaped by generations of winemakers. Later, you'll take a traditional Rabelo boat on the river, the kind that used to carry Port wine downriver. The Pinhão railway station with its blue and white azulejo tiles comes next, and then you'll finish in Sabrosa, the birthplace of explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Sabrosa to Peso da Régua
Your final cycling day covers 44 km on quiet back roads through the Douro Valley with sweeping views of terraced vineyards and rolling hills all around. As you ride toward the river, you'll see the valley's rugged character, and by day's end you'll reach Peso da Régua, the main hub for Port wine and home to over 125 grape varieties.

- Day 7
Peso da Régua to Porto
You'll leave the Douro Valley and head to Porto, a historic UNESCO city with over 150 listed monuments. Check out the Luis I Bridge, wander through the Port wine cellars, and walk the cobbled streets of the Ribeira district with its colourful buildings. Try the local Francesinha sandwich, which has melted cheese and a rich sauce, and you'll see how the old and new sides of the city blend together.
