Itinerary
- Day 1
Swakopmund to Sesriem
Your guide picks you up from your Swakopmund accommodation at 11:15, so you'll have time for one last look around town before heading out. Then it's east into the desert, crossing the Namib gravel plains and going through two dramatic mountain passes, the Kuiseb and Gaub, before you hit the Tropic of Capricorn. Stop in Solitaire for their famous apple pie, then drive on to Sesriem where you'll set up camp at the gateway to the dunes.

- Day 2
Sesriem
You'll start before dawn to catch sunrise at Dune 45, climbing to a vantage point and watching the sand transform through apricot and orange colors. After a quick breakfast back at the vehicle, board 4x4 shuttles for the final 5km through the ancient Tsauchab River-bed to Sossusvlei. Walk through Dead Vlei with your guide, seeing the 1000-year-old skeletal trees, and climb one of the world's highest dunes. Back at Sesriem you'll have lunch and a swim, then explore the nearby Sesriem Canyon on foot. If you're interested, there's an optional evening walk to Elim Dune for sunset.

- Day 3
Sesriem to Aus
The drive south takes you through ever-changing desert scenery, mountains, and grassland to the tiny community of Aus. Your destination is Klein Aus Vista, a private campsite just inside the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, where you'll arrive in the early afternoon. After setting up camp, spend the rest of the day on unguided hiking trails across the wide open landscape, with hopes of catching a great sunset.

- Day 4
Aus to Lüderitz
Early start today with sealed tar road as you travel through grasslands and desert toward the ocean. Watch for desert-adapted wild horses roaming the area, their origins here still a mystery. You'll visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a striking abandoned German village from the 1908 diamond rush, and take a guided tour of the historic buildings. Then continue to Lüderitz with its colonial-style architecture, drive out to Diaz Point to see the historical monument left by Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Diaz in 1487, and return to Klein Aus Vista for sunset and sundowner drinks.

- Day 5
Aus to Keetmanshoop
Long drive heading east and then south to complete your traverse of Namibia's southern region. The main stop is Fish River Canyon in the /Ai-/Ais Richtersveldt Transfrontier National Park, second only to the Grand Canyon in size with vistas over Hell's Bend and its huge meander. The canyon stretches 160 km long, 27 km wide, and reaches 550 meters deep in places. Later you'll continue north to Keetmanshoop, then head to Quiver Tree Forest campsite, where these aloes (Namibia's national tree) display weird and wonderful shapes with the oldest specimens around 200 years old. Spend your final night reflecting on your adventure around the campfire.

- Day 6
Keetmanshoop to Windhoek
You'll head north on the main tar road back to Windhoek with no gravel roads today. The drive passes several interesting landmarks including Brukkaros volcano and the Gibeon meteorite strike area, though these are too far off-route to stop. You'll have a light lunch somewhere along the way in the small towns of Mariental or Rehoboth, then arrive back in Windhoek in the late afternoon and get dropped at your accommodation within the city.
