Itinerary
- Day 1
Arrival at Puerto Maldonado
You'll arrive at the airport or bus station and get transferred to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge for an orientation briefing. The journey takes about 2 hours by road, though if you choose the river route it'll be 6+ hours by boat. Once you reach the lodge, there's a welcome meal waiting, and then you head out on a short rainforest walk to get your bearings. This introductory trek gives you a chance to spot amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and insects before settling in for the night.

Landmarks/POIs Tambopata River Tambopata National Reserve - Day 2
El Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick to Monte Amazonico Lodge
Your alarm goes off at 4:30 am for the boat ride to El Chuncho, the world's largest macaw clay lick about 1.5 hours away. Once there, you'll watch hundreds of colorful macaws, parrots, and other bird species show up to eat clay from the riverbank. Keep watching for jaguars, tapirs, and capybaras moving through the trees. After breakfast, you head back to the lodge for lunch and a rest period. Later in the afternoon, you transfer by boat to Monte Amazonico Lodge, then go out after dark with flashlights to search for caimans along the Madre de Dios River.

Lake Sandoval to Puerto Maldonado Departure
Following breakfast, you hike 3 kilometers through thick rainforest to reach Lake Sandoval, one of Tambopata National Reserve's largest lakes. Once there, you get in a rowing boat to paddle around and look for howler monkeys, brown capuchin monkeys, tamarins, sloths, and if you're lucky, giant river otters. The lake is also home to piranhas and various bird species. After a typical lunch at the lodge, you make your way back to Puerto Maldonado by boat and then get transferred to the airport or terminal for your departure.
