Itinerary
- Day 1
Keflavik to Reykjavik
You'll land at Keflavik International Airport and get transferred into Reykjavik for your first night. After settling in, set up your tent at a campsite near the city center. It's a straightforward arrival day, so you'll have time to get oriented and prepare your gear for the adventure ahead.

- Day 2
Thingvellir - Geysir - Gullfoss
Start with a walking tour through Reykjavik to get a feel for the city's Nordic character and main landmarks. Then pack everything up and head out to Thingvellir, where you'll walk between the continental plates of America and Europe. From there, move on to see the Geysir geyser and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. You'll camp overnight in either the geysir area or further into the highlands, depending on how the day goes.

- Day 3
Hveravellir
You're heading into the European desert around Kjölur slope with views of snow-covered mountains and glaciers all around you. Weather permitting, you might spend two nights at Hveravellir to explore on foot. There's a chance to visit the geothermal area of Kerlingarfjöll and soak in a natural hot spring, so bring your swimsuit.

Hveravellir to Akureyri
Drive north and you'll pass the charming peat church of Vidimyri and the Glaumbaer museum farm. Later, arrive in Akureyri, Iceland's northern metropolis, where you can grab coffee and do some shopping along the pretty streets. The fjords and table mountains create nice views from the hills nearby, so there's time to explore the area.

Akureyri to Lake Myvatn
Head to the volcanic region around Lake Myvatn and set up camp for two nights on the lake shore. You'll explore bizarre natural features including pseudocraters, the lava labyrinth of Dimmuborgir, and the Hverfjall crater rim. Optional visits to hot caves are available, and there's extensive hiking through otherworldly landscapes to keep you busy.

Lake Myvatn
This is a more relaxed day at Lake Myvatn where you can watch the rich bird life and enjoy the natural surroundings. There's quite a bit to choose from: scenic flights over Vatnajökull, horseback riding, laundry, shopping, reading, or swimming in Myvatn's geothermal pool. You set the pace on this one.

Landmarks Lake Myvatn Vatnajökull - Day 7
Namnarskard - Krafla - Herdubreid
Explore the volcanic solfataras and fumaroles at Namnarskard field and the Krafla area. Then drive through Iceland's blackest lava fields and cross rivers in the highland desert. You'll have views of the spectacular Herdubreid volcano, and you'll camp in a green oasis below this iconic landmark for the night.

Dragon Gorge
You're hiking through rare lunar landscape made of tuff, slag, lava, and basalt desert surrounding Herdubreid. Trek over sand, lava slabs, basalt, and across rivers until you reach the Dragon Gorge campsite where you'll stay for two nights. It's a full day of walking through extraordinary terrain.

Landmarks Herdubreid Dragon Gorge Askja - Day 9
Dragon Gorge
Hike to Askja volcanic caldera, one of Europe's real highlights. You'll trek through black lava ash with bizarre lava sculptures that look like giant trolls. Early summer often brings snow at the crater top. Descend into the caldera to see the wide blue crater lake, and if you're up for it, there's an optional sulphur bath in Lake Viti's 25°C/77°F water.

- Day hike to Askja caldera (approximately 9 km, 3.5 hours, 1000m elevation gain with 750m ascent and 250m descent)

Myvatn - Godafoss - Nyidalur
A long driving stage takes you back via lava slabs and rivers to Myvatn where you'll have time for shopping and lunch. After that, continue east to the beautifully shaped Godafoss waterfall and relax at a cozy café for a bit. Then head south into the highlands along the spectacular Sprengisandur road with lots of photo opportunities. You'll camp below the Tungnafellsjökull glacier near Vatnajökull.

Landmannahellir
Continue through the southern highlands on the legendary F26 road, passing through vast plateaus, intensely blue glacial lakes, and rivers with views of Hofsj'kull and Vatnajökull glaciers. There are many river crossings on gravel roads, then you'll hit a relaxing stretch of tarred road before the power station where you can see Hekla volcano. Arrive at the rustic camp in Landmannahellir and take a short evening hike in the hills.

Landmarks Hofsjökull Vatnajökull Hekla Landmannahellir - Day 12
Landmannahellir
Hike through an idyllic landscape with colorful mountains, wild streams, and valleys that resemble a confectioner's landscape. There's an optional climb to Blafell summit if you want 360-degree views of the area. You can choose hikes of varying lengths and altitudes based on how you're feeling and your fitness level. After hiking, take a dip in the warm river for natural wellness.

Eldgja - Vik
Leave the highlands on the spectacular Eldgja road, the largest volcanic fissure on Earth. Take a short hike through the gorge and you'll start seeing greenery again after days in the black and red lava. Arrive on the south coast near Vik and visit the bird cliffs of Dyrhóley where you might spot puffins (watch out for aggressive skuas). The rock formations shaped like trolls in the sea are remarkable.

Vik to Reykjavik
Drive back to Reykjavik along the picturesque south coast, passing the impressive Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. You'll see the black glacier tongue of Myrdalsjökull and vast alluvial plains before reaching the capital in the afternoon. Take time to reflect on everything you've seen and celebrate the tour with your travel companions.
