Cartagena
You'll arrive in Cartagena and get settled into your accommodation. Once you're ready, head out to the walled city for dinner at a restaurant that mixes Caribbean flavors with Mediterranean influences, giving you a nice introduction to the local food scene.

Cartagena
Start the morning with a walking tour through Cartagena's historic center, passing by the monumental stone walls and fortifications that define the old city. After that, make your way to Getsemani where you'll see colorful street art and learn about the colonial period and the Afro-Colombian community. The afternoon is free, so you can either continue exploring or head to the beaches on your own.

Cartagena
Take a local bus to Bazurto Market, the place where Cartagenans actually shop and eat. You'll walk through the busy market, taste local fruits and drinks, and learn about the city's history including Barrio Chino before having lunch. Later this evening, you'll head to dinner with Caribbean music playing and then participate in a private champeta dancing workshop where you'll learn the traditional moves.

San Basilio de Palenque
Travel about 1.5 hours from Cartagena to San Basilio de Palenque, a UNESCO site recognized for its oral and intangible heritage and its significance as the first free town founded by formerly enslaved Africans in the Americas. Spend the full day here interacting with locals and learning about Afro-Colombian heritage through music, dance, food, and art.

This day is yours to do what you'd like. Rest on the beach, go island hopping, walk through the Walled City or Getsemani's art district, shop around town, or try other activities that interest you. La Boquilla
Head north of Cartagena to La Boquilla, a community that's kept its cultural identity and resisted gentrification. You'll sail through the mangroves with local fishermen, learning about their artisanal fishing techniques and traditional way of life. After bringing in the catch of the day, you'll return to share a traditional lunch with the community.

Departure
