Itinerary
- Day 1
Ulaanbaatar
You'll touch down in Ulaanbaatar early morning and head straight to your hotel for some rest. After settling in, the afternoon takes you to Gandan Monastery, one of the country's most complete temples with its original structures and active religious community. From there, it's on to the National Museum where you can piece together Mongolia's history and geography. By evening, you're watching traditional folk performances and having dinner at a local restaurant.

- Day 2
Ulaanbaatar to Terelj National Park
Heading east from the capital toward the steppe, you'll reach the 13th Century Camp where a full day focuses on how Mongolians actually lived back then. Walk through different sections to see blacksmiths at work, teachers with students, herders managing animals, shamans performing rituals, and displays about the khans. Later you'll drive to Terelj National Park and settle into a ger camp for the night.

- Day 3
Terelj National Park
Terelj National Park fills your entire day. If you're up for it, a horse ride takes you through forested mountains at about 1,600 metres/5,249 feet where you'll see alpine scenery and unusual rock formations including Turtle Rock and Praying Lama Rock. Can't ride or prefer something else? Cycling and kayaking work just as well for covering the terrain.

- Day 4
Terelj National Park to Hustai National Park
Leaving Terelj, you head to the Genghis Khan statue on the Tuul River's banks, a massive 40-metre/131-foot structure visible for miles. Climbing inside gets you sweeping views across the countryside. Then it's onward to Hustai National Park where an early evening drive lets you spot the rare and endangered wild Przewalski horses in their natural setting.

- Day 5
Hustai National Park to Kharkhorin
An early morning ride on horseback sets the tone before driving to Kharkhorin, formerly the Mongol Empire's capital. You'll tour Erdene Zuu Monastery, likely the country's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery built in the 16th century from the ruins of the old city. The museum here provides solid context about the region's past.

Kharkhorin to Orkhon Valley

Your destination is the Orkhon Valley, a sacred landscape that once served as the steppes' seat of imperial power.

Orkhon Valley
The Orkhon Valley, fed by the Orkhon River, is a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape and one of Mongolia's most significant areas. With a packed lunch, you'll get in kayaks and paddle through a series of small canyons with calm scenery surrounding you the entire way.

Orkhon Valley
Today takes you to Orkhon Khurkhree Waterfall, which gets really spectacular after heavy rains, particularly in late July and August. A short walk downriver shows you a 22-metre/72-foot gorge. The area around here is excellent for riding horses, and you'll have chances to swim in natural pools before heading back to the ger camp for dinner.

Orkhon Valley to Khogno Khan National Park
An hour's walk through pine forests gets you to Tovkhon Khiid, a small monastery with remarkable views of the surrounding landscape. After that, you'll drive through valleys and over high mountain passes to Khogno Khan National Park, known for historical sites, wildlife, and dramatic scenery. You'll spend the night at a traditional ger camp overlooking the steppe.
