Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Gap

    You'll arrive in Gap and head to your hotel whenever suits you best. Your room opens at 16:00, but if you get there earlier, you can drop your bags and wander around town to get a feel for the place. Later at 18:30, you'll meet the other people on your trip in the hotel lobby, then head out for a group dinner somewhere in town.

  2. Day 2

    Champsaur Valley Via Ferratas

    Meet your guide at 8:30 AM to tackle two via ferratas in the Champsaur valley. You'll start with the Ancelle Via Ferrata, a 250m climb that works well if you're new to this type of climbing. After grabbing lunch, you'll move on to the Arthouze Via Ferrata, which is tougher and runs 500m with some dramatic sections including a pillar ascent and near-vertical climbing.

    • Arthouze Via Ferrata (500m journey, 180m ascent, three difficulty sections with 40m pillar ascent, natural tunnel, horizontal traverse, and near-vertical climb)

  3. Day 3

    Devoluy Via Ferratas

    Head into the Devoluy limestone massif to work through two challenging routes. Start with the Gorges d'Agnielles, a 500m exposed route (kids seven and older can do this one), and there's an optional abseil if you want it. After lunch, you'll move to Les Etroits via ferrata, a longer 1100m route that takes you through a deep gorge with caves and block passages to navigate.

    • Via Ferrata Gorges d'Agnielles (500m, easy initial section with abseil descent option, 50m vertical climb section with limestone formations and exposed vertical passages)
    • Via Ferrata Les Etroits (1100m long through deep narrow gorge with caves and block passages, easier and more demanding athletic sections available)

    • Lunch at restaurant in St Etienne near afternoon via ferrata start
    • Picnic by stream after morning session

  4. Day 4

    Ecrins Massif Via Ferratas

    You'll drive along Serre Poncon lake toward the Ecrins Massif for some scenic views. Then you get to try La Falaise in Freissinieres, which is France's first via ferrata built for recreational climbing. After that, you'll tackle the granite Gorges d'Ailefroide with different route options. On the way back, if time permits and the weather's nice, there's a chance to swim in the lake.

    • Via Ferrata La Falaise in Freissinieres (1000m long, 200m ascent, first recreational via ferrata in France built in 1988, progresses from easy to challenging with limestone cliffs)
    • Via Ferrata Gorges d'Ailefroide (granite route, easy and technical options, 300m section with three monkey bridges, 350m technical section with wire bridge and athletic climb)

    Optional Activities

    • Lunch picnic between via ferratas
    • Restaurant meal between via ferratas
    • Swimming in Serre Poncon lake on return journey

  5. Day 5

    Gap

    Your last day features La Grande Fistoire, which ranks among the top via ferratas in the French Alps. You'll climb the cliff with wooden and wire bridges, then stop for a picnic lunch at the top with views all around you. The descent involves three zip lines (150m, 130m, and 220m) before you head back to Gap, arriving by 15:00.
