You might catch sight of grey and common seals along the water, then continue to Spey Bay Hotel and the Scottish Dolphin Wildlife Centre. After that, walk through Alder woodland beside the river mouth, following the River Spey inland until you reach Fochabers for the night.

  3. Day 3

    Fochabers to Craigellachie

Rejoin the Speyside Way for a day with different types of ground under your feet: tarred roads, woodland paths, and forestry tracks. There's a sharp descent followed by a switchback climb that gets steep, then things level out as you walk through woods toward Boat o' Brig where you get striking views across Spey Valley. Pass by Arndilly House on your way to Craigellachie, and if distilleries interest you, Macallan is right there as an option before settling in for the evening.

  4. Day 4

    Craigellachie to Ballindalloch

This day starts easy, walking alongside the River Spey where fishermen cast their lines regularly. Follow an old abandoned railway line heading toward Aberlour, where you can stop for lunch or a browse through the shops. The route continues through woodland, and you'll pass several distilleries including Dailuaine, Knockando House, and Tamdhu along the way. End the day in Ballindalloch, known for its castle and its own distillery.

  5. Day 5

    Ballindalloch to Grantown on Spey

Today's the toughest walk of the route. Leave Ballindalloch heading past Cragganmore Distillery with Ben Rinnes showing in the distance. The terrain gets more demanding as you move through birch woods with ups and downs, then open boggy ground, before entering Cairngorms National Park. You'll cross old Cromdale Station from 1863 and Cromdale Old Kirk, then walk through native Scots pine Anagach Woods where rare capercaillie birds live. It's a long day, but you finish in Grantown on Spey.

Start with a gentle walk along the old railway line to Nethy Bridge, then pick up an old military road toward Abernethy nature reserve with its woodlands. If birds matter to you, take the detour to RSPB Osprey Centre at Loch Garten where capercaillie, crested tits, and other species show up regularly. Head through Boat of Garten, known as the Osprey Village, onto open ground with Cairngorms views and the Strathspey Railway visible. Cross heather heathland past a golf course, then reach Aviemore Centre where the Speyside Way officially ends.

This expedition was a very very very excellent experience. The crew, staff, and destinations were amazing. We were fortunate enough to have better than normal weather. I would definitely do this again with the same crew and staff. They were very knowledgeable and accommodating and had tons of experience. Artie, Nix, Woody, Neil, Sofia, and the rest of the team made this trip a very memorable trip. I also had a booking issue and it was resolved. If you have the time time, do this trip! You wont forget it.

A delightful trip through the southern Lake District. There were some hiccups in transportation scheduling and communication between the tour operators, so beware of that on self-guided tours. But the accommodations were nice and the rest of trip was fantastic.
