  1. Day 1

    Colombo

    You'll arrive at Colombo International Airport and get picked up for transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free, so use it to rest up and get settled after your flight.

  2. Day 2

    Negombo to Anuradhapura

    Head out from Negombo early toward the Cultural Triangle, driving along Kandy Road through villages and towns. You'll stop briefly in Negombo fishing village, then push on to Anuradhapura. Spend the afternoon checking out the Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweliseya dagoba, Basawakkulama Tank, Samadhi Buddha Statue and Isurumuniya Rock Temple before heading back to your hotel.

  3. Day 3

    Anuradhapura to Sigiriya

    After breakfast, head to Hiriwadunna village to see how local life works. You'll hand-pick vegetables with farmers, prepare them for cooking, and take a bullock cart ride through the countryside. Later in the afternoon, get to Sigiriya Rock Fortress and climb the 1200 steps past fountain gardens, boulder gardens, mirror walls, frescoes and the lion's staircase. The panoramic views from the top are worth it, and you'll finish with a fresh king coconut.

    Dambulla

    Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, which has been significant since the 1st century B.C. Walk through 5 cave temples holding around 150 Buddha statues, cave paintings and a golden temple. The evening's yours to relax by the pool and recover from the day.

  5. Day 5

    Dambulla to Kandy

    Travel toward Kandy and stop at Matale Spice Garden to see how spices like nutmeg, pepper, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom grow and get processed. You can pick up some to bring home if you want. Check in at your Kandy hotel to settle in. Later, visit the Temple of the Tooth for a pooja ceremony and watch a Kandyan Dance performance with fire walking, then walk through Kandy city streets trying local food.

  6. Day 6

    Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

    After breakfast, visit a tea plantation to meet tea pickers and tour the processing factory, then do a tea tasting. Your guide will drop you at Gampola train station for a scenic ride through the highlands to Nanu Oya. You'll arrive in Nuwara Eliya where colonial buildings mix with tropical surroundings. A guide meets you at the station and takes you to your hotel.

    Nuwara Eliya to Yala

    Head down from the highlands toward Kirinda and Yala National Park. On the way, stop at Buduruwagala temple complex with seven 10th-century statues from the Mahayana school. In the afternoon, do a jeep safari in Yala to look for leopards, elephants, sloth bears, water buffaloes, peacocks, wild boars and crocodiles. Back at your hotel by evening, you'll have time to relax.

    Yala to Udawalawe

    Travel to Udawalawe in late morning, stopping at the Elephant Transit Home, Asia's first elephant rehabilitation center that opened in 1995 on 200 acres near Udawalawe National Park. Then do a jeep safari in the park itself to see large elephant herds in the wild, along with spotted deer, sambur, barking deer, water buffalo and jackals. The afternoon's relaxed back at your hotel.

    Udawalawe to Galle to Bentota

    Drive the scenic route from the southeast coast to Galle in the southwest. Walk around Galle's Dutch-influenced streets, checking out colonial verandas, the old gate with its British coat of arms, Zwart bastion and the 18-foot lighthouse. You'll see the working community with offices, courts, shops and churches. After that, head to Bentota for your overnight stay.
