The drive takes you past Mojave National Preserve with your first glimpses of Joshua tree groves along the way. Once you reach the trailhead, there's time for lunch before you start hiking. 2. Day 2

    Joshua Tree Backcountry

This morning starts after breakfast and breaking down camp. You'll hike 8.5 miles deeper into the park, traveling along ridges with views across the terrain. The route takes you through monzogranite rock formations, and you'll need to refill water supplies along the way. After passing through a wide expanse of Joshua trees, you'll find some old structures from the 1800s before reaching your camp in an area known for quail. It's a longer day on the trail but the landscape changes significantly as you go.

  3. Day 3

    Joshua Tree Backcountry

Today's only 6 miles but the ground is harder to cover. You'll navigate backcountry canyons with sandy washes, slickrock sections, and scattered boulders. There's a water cache you'll pass, then you'll follow various trails and washes heading higher. By afternoon you reach a grassy flat at elevation surrounded by some of the park's largest Joshua trees, and that's where you'll camp for your final night in the backcountry.
