- Day 1
Colombo
The airport transfer gets you to your hotel, and from there the day is completely yours. You can kick back by the pool or wander around Colombo's streets on your own terms, getting a feel for the capital.

- Day 2
Dambulla - Polonnaruwa - Dambulla
Drive inland and stop at the fruit and vegetable market in Naramwela Town to see local produce. Dambulla Rock Temple comes next, where you'll explore five caves holding over 150 Buddha images from the 1st Century BC. After that, check out the ancient ruins at Polonnaruwa, including the Royal Palace and Gal Vihara dating back to the 11th century. You'll head back to Dambulla by evening.

- Day 3
Sigiriya - Kandy
Start early for the climb up Sigiriya Lion Rock, a 200-meter-high fortress from over 1500 years ago. The famous Heavenly Maidens paintings are visible on the way up. Later, visit a spice garden in Matale to learn about local herbs and spices, then continue to Kandy where you'll stay for two nights.

- Day 4
Kandy
Take a guided tour of Kandy, the last capital of Sri Lankan kings. You'll visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and drive around scenic Kandy Lake. Browse the local bazaar and gem museum, then hop on a tuk tuk ride up into the hills for views of the city. The Geragama Tea Factory is next, and the day ends with a cultural performance featuring traditional Sri Lankan music and dance.

Nuwara Eliya
Spend the morning relaxed in Kandy before heading to the railway station. The scenic train ride takes you through tea plantations and mountain passes, passing tea pickers, waterfalls and suspension bridges on the way up to Nuwara Eliya. Once you arrive at Sri Lanka's most popular hill resort and tea country heart, you'll get a guided tour of the town, locally known as 'Little England'.

- Day 6
Udawalawe National Park
Head south to Embilipitiya, which serves as your base for Udawalawe National Park. Around 400 elephants live here, and you'll also spot leopards, sloth bears, langur monkeys and various deer species. An afternoon game drive lets you search for wildlife.

Colombo
Make your way back to Colombo, stopping at the Gem Mine and Museum in Ratnapura. Sri Lanka holds 40 out of the 85 gem types found worldwide. Back in Colombo, explore the Fort area with its government buildings and shops, see the unique Gangarama Temple, and take a stroll along Galle Face Green on a guided tour.

Beruwala/Bentota
After breakfast, drive south along the West Coast to the holiday resorts of Beruwala and Bentota. Spend your final days by the beach relaxing.

Beruwala/Bentota
The palm-fringed beaches here have warm, clear waters and golden sand. You can try snorkelling, scuba diving, water skiing or surfing. Grab a glass of Toddy, a local coconut-flavoured drink, or head to the spa for Ayurveda treatments the area is known for. Simply unwinding on the beach with a cocktail works too.
