Itinerary
- Day 1
Kilimanjaro National Park Gate to Mandara
After breakfast and a quick briefing, you'll drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, which takes about an hour from your starting point. Once there, you'll register and get going on the climb itself. The first section takes you through rainforest to Mandara encampment, and if you're up for it, there's an optional detour to Maundi Crater where you can see across Northern Tanzania and into Kenya. Keep an eye out for the tall Eucalyptus trees, various bird species, and Colobus monkeys hanging around in the canopy.

Mandara to Horombo
You'll leave the rainforest behind and head up through open moorlands toward Horombo encampment. The path climbs gradually and the views start opening up, so you'll see Mawenzi and Kibo's summit coming into focus. Giant lobelias and groundsels appear along the way, which is pretty cool to see. At this elevation, some people start noticing the altitude, so take it easy and stay hydrated.

Horombo to Moshi
After eating breakfast, you'll make your way down through the moorland back to Mandara Hut, then continue descending into the lush forest zone heading toward the National Park gate at Marangu. The lower sections get wet and muddy, so wearing gaiters and using trekking poles really helps with footing. A driver will be waiting at Marangu village to take you back to your hotel in Moshi, which is roughly an hour's drive away.
