Itinerary
- Day 1
Salzburg
You'll arrive in Salzburg and have the day to explore at your own pace. The winding alleyways and squares here have a lot of character, and it's the perfect time to settle in and get a feel for the city. Make sure to try the local coffee culture, which is a big part of what makes Salzburg special. Austria's festival and cultural heart really comes through when you walk around and take in the atmosphere.

- Day 2
Salzburg to St. Johann
After breakfast, you'll cycle south from Salzburg through shady meadows following the Salzach river toward Hallein, a former salt mining town with a nice old town to explore. Along the way, you'll pass a rushing waterfall at Golling, and the cycle path continues to St. Johann where Pongau Cathedral's towers stand out against the landscape. It's a scenic day of cycling through the Austrian countryside with plenty of interesting stops.

- Day 3
St. Johann to Mölltal
You'll leave the Salzach and head into the Gastein Valley, following the Gasteiner Ache through wild and romantic scenery. Cycling via Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein brings you to Bad Gastein, a well-known spa resort at the foot of the Hohe Tauern. You'll see the iconic Gastein waterfall, then take a short train ride through the Alps from Böckstein to Mallnitz. From there, you'll enjoy a thrilling descent to your hotel in Mölltal, ending the day with some adrenaline.

Mölltal to Villach
Starting from Mölltal, you'll cycle along the Möll river through high mountain landscapes that really show off the region. At Möllbrücke you enter the Drau Valley, where the atmosphere shifts to the sunnier south of Austria. The route rolls gently downhill almost on its own along the Drau, passing through Spittal where Renaissance Porcia Castle sits waiting to be seen. Later you'll reach Villach with its charming old town, southern feel, and restaurants perfect for dinner.

Villach to Kanaltal Valley
You'll take a train to Tarvisio to skip the uphill work, then spend the day cycling comfortably downhill through the Kanaltal valley on a well-developed cycle path in Italy. The Friulian Alps region unfolds around you with unspoiled forests and nice views, and you'll stay overnight in one of the pretty villages at the foothills of the Julian Alps. It's a relaxed day of mostly descending through new scenery.

Kanaltal Valley to Udine
You'll cycle to Gemona del Friuli, one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta dominates the skyline. From there, it's on to Udine, where vineyard vines start appearing along the route and the pace slows down. Stop for coffee in the piazza or wander through alleys with late Gothic and Renaissance buildings, soaking in the dolce vita atmosphere.

Udine to Grado
You'll cycle through vast reed landscapes and along small water channels heading toward the Gulf of Venice. A stop in Aquileia gives you time to explore the historic Roman city known as the Second Rome. Later you'll arrive in Grado, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic, with extensive sandy beaches, a historic harbor, and narrow streets filled with cozy Italian restaurants. It's a nice transition from the mountains to the coast.

Grado Departure
Your cycling tour along the Alpine cycle path comes to an end in Grado. You'll say goodbye to the coast and the journey, having traveled from Salzburg through Austria and into Italy, covering mountains, valleys, and finally the Adriatic. It's time to reflect on the route and head out from here.
