Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Agadir to Tafraoute

You'll head inland from Agadir through the Western Anti-Atlas mountains to start your journey. In Tiznit, wander through the old medina and climb up for views across the town, then spend time browsing the silver jewelry souk. From there, the drive takes you through valleys with argan groves and past tree-climbing goats on your way to Tafraoute. This Berber town sits surrounded by pink granite mountains in the Ameln valley. Before settling in, check out the Pierres Bleues, natural rocks painted blue, pink and black by a Belgian artist back in 1984. You'll stay overnight in a riad with dinner included.

  2. Day 2

    Tafraoute to Erg Chegaga

After breakfast, you'll travel deeper into the Anti-Atlas mountains, staying off the main tourist routes. The route passes through Tata at the base of Jebel Bani mountain, then stops in the Berber village of Foum Zguid where you'll have lunch and watch a traditional carpet weaving demonstration. Next comes the old Paris-Dakar road crossing Iriki lake, a temporary wetland where gazelles, lizards, and snakes sometimes appear, and you might spot hyenas. The landscape shifts to the dry salt desert of Iriki before reaching the massive sand dunes of Erg Chegaga. You'll see nomads with camels, donkeys and goats scattered across the sand. Later, you'll ride a camel at a relaxed pace to your desert camp where you'll sleep in a nomad tent or under the stars.

    Erg Chegaga to Ouarzazate

Starting with breakfast in the desert camp, you'll travel by 4x4 through the Sahara to M'Hamid, then switch to regular roads following the Draa river toward Zagora. At Tamegroute, a 16th-century Saadian town, a local guide will take you through an old Qoran library and subterranean kasbah, and you can browse pottery shops afterward. The route shows off panoramic views of the River Draa with oases and date palms lining the banks. By evening you'll reach Ouarzazate, known as the movie city, and check into a riad for the night.

After lunch, there's a detour to the striking Telouet Kasbah, which once belonged to the powerful Glaoui family and offers fantastic views, though it's gradually crumbling back into the red earth. We had a great trip with our guide Hassan and his well-maintained 4x4 Defender. Although some areas of our tour were not accessible because of heavy rain the weeks before, Hassan spontaneously changed the route and hotels. He was very flexible, well organised and punctual. Hotels and food were very nice. Our kids (10 and 13) also enjoyed the adventure-like holiday. Thanks to the many languages Hassan speaks, conversation was no problem for them. It was definitely not our last trip to Morocco and not our last with Hassan. I can recommend the tour, Hassan and his company Explore Morocco Travel.

My wife and I had the pleasure of a 4 day tour, driven and escorted by IBrhaim. We were fortunate in that we ended up the only passengers for our trip, so it made it easier for him and us. His English was good and driving was excellent, which was important seeing we drove a long distance. Everything from the accommodation to food supplied surpassed our expectations. We recommend this Company
