Tafi Atome - Wli Waterfalls
Start in Accra where you can check out modern shopping malls, pubs and cafes, or walk through the historic Jamestown district to see colonial buildings and the fishing port. After that, head inland to Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary where Mona monkeys will sit on your shoulder while you feed them bananas. The trip finishes at Wli Waterfalls, West Africa's tallest waterfall, where you'll have time to hike and see one of Ghana's best natural sites.

Lome - Northern Togo
You'll enter Togo and visit Kpalime, an artistic town known for traditional crafts like woodcarving and batik. From there, continue to the capital Lome where you can check out the fetish markets, see displays at the Museum of West African Arts, and walk through the colourful Grand Market. Later you'll head north for wild camping before crossing into Benin.

Pendjari NP - Abomey - Lake Aheme - Grand Popo - Ouidah - Lake Ganvie
In Benin's northern Tata Somba region you'll see traditional two-storey fortified huts, then take a half-day walk to explore them, visit a school and see a baobab tree. Next comes Pendjari National Park for wild camping and a full-day game drive spotting elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos and antelope. You'll visit Abomey to see ruined temples and palaces from the Dahomeyan empire, camp on Lake Aheme's shores and watch the Zangbeto voodoo dance. In Grand Popo you'll attend a traditional voodoo ceremony and look for green sea turtles. After camping on Ouidah's beach and taking a half-day tour of forts, temples and museums, you'll take a boat trip to Lake Ganvie's stilted village home to 30,000 Tofinu people, spending a night there before heading to Nigeria.

Osogbo - Benin City - Calabar
Your Nigerian journey starts in Abeokuta where you'll visit Olumo Rock, a natural fortress used during 19th century tribal warfare. Head to Osogbo and walk through the Sacred Grove Forest with its sanctuaries, shrines and sculptures dedicated to Osun, the Goddess of Fertility. In Benin City you can explore the national museum's ancient artefacts from the Benin Empire or walk Bronze Casters Street to see modern bronze artworks. The route ends in the lively colonial port town of Calabar where you'll see the Slave Trade Museum, National Museum and Drill Monkey Ranch.

Yaounde - Kribi
You'll cross into Cameroon at Ekok's southern border and travel in a military convoy to the relaxed beach town of Limbe. There you can trek up Mt. Cameroon (4095m/13,435ft) over 3 days, visit local primate reserves, or relax on the beach. After that, head inland to the capital Yaounde where you can visit local markets and monasteries. Later you'll continue to Kribi, one of West Africa's finest beaches, where you'll spend time enjoying the sand, surf and seafood.

Libreville - Lamberene
Positioned on the equator, you'll spend a couple of days in the Reserve de la Lope doing game drives or forest trekking to see mandrills, forest elephants and buffalo. In the capital Libreville, visit the National Museum of Arts and Tradition to learn about local culture. For adventure, take a boat to Pongara National Park, a beautiful mangrove reserve where you can spot nesting turtles, elephants, chimpanzees and buffalo. Later you'll visit Lamberene to explore Dr Albert Schweitzer's hospital, now a museum showcasing the Nobel Prize winner's work for the African community.

Dolisie - Diosso Gorges - Pointe Noire
Your first couple of days in Congo feature challenging dirt tracks that often turn to thick mud, testing the vehicle's off-road abilities. The small town of Dolisie provides a break where you'll experience local culture and try delicious street food. You'll visit the red Gorges of Diosso, Congo's Grand Canyon, and see the local museum. In Pointe Noire, check out the African Circle Museum and stock up at a rare supermarket. From here you can optionally visit Conkouati-Douli National Park to see thriving chimpanzee populations and spot elephants, leopards, turtles and gorillas.

Boma - Matadi
A short day's travel through the oil-rich Angolan exclave of Cabinda gets you to the DRC and more mud tracks heading toward the mighty Congo River. Boma is a bustling port town where you can experience a true Congolese river town atmosphere. After crossing the Congo River via the huge Matadi suspension bridge, you'll spend time in Matadi town sampling local food and exploring the bustling markets.

Luanda - Kalandula Falls - Benguela - Lubango
In Mbanza Kongo you'll visit one of sub-Saharan Africa's oldest churches and explore the Royal Museum, the place where Portuguese navigators first discovered a kingdom. Luanda, the capital, offers modern conveniences alongside colonial architecture and historical museums. You'll travel through scenic landscapes to Kalandula Falls, one of Africa's largest and rarely visited waterfalls where you'll likely have the place to yourself. Stop briefly in Benguela, an ancient slave port, then finish in the cool and picturesque Lubango where the Christ the King Statue overlooks the town and the Tundavala Gap offers spectacular mountain views.

You'll spend a couple of days in Etosha National Park driving through desert and bushveld searching for lion, buffalo, elephant, giraffe and other great mammals. Visit a traditional Himba village to learn about these indigenous nomads' way of life. Near Kamanjab you can see cheetahs up close at a cheetah park and watch them feeding. Your route includes optional visits to a petrified forest with 45m trunks and bushman rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. The desolate Skeleton Coast offers abandoned oil rigs, shipwrecks and a noisy seal colony. Spitzkoppe features bold granite outcrops rising dramatically from flat plains. In adventure capital Swakopmund, try deep-sea fishing, quad-biking, sand-boarding, camel riding or skydiving, or just relax on the deserted beaches. Head to Sossusvlei's iconic towering red sand dunes where you can climb Dune 45 at sunrise or attempt the challenging Big Daddy dune. Finish at Fish River Canyon National Park with one of Africa's most incredible natural rifts.
