  1. Day 1

Almaty to Khan Tengri Base Camp

After breakfast, your driver takes you to Narynkol town and then continues to the Khan Tengri frontier post. You'll stop at the climber's camp located at 2,300m where you meet your guide and get your first lessons in horseback riding. Once you're comfortable in the saddle, you'll ride for about 3 hours through forests and scenic terrain to reach Akkol moraine lake at 3,080m. Back at camp, you'll have dinner and settle in for your first night.

  2. Day 2

Karakol Lake and Khan Tengri Peak

Your day focuses on exploring the Karakol moraine lake area and the Tien Shan landscape around you. Trekking takes you through gorges where you can see Khan Tengri peak rising to 7,010m (23,000 ft), which happens to be Kazakhstan's highest mountain and sits right where Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and China meet. As you move through the terrain, the environment shifts noticeably from conifer forests and alpine meadows down into tundra and zones with permanent snow. Dinner back at camp and another night under the stars.

    Bayankol Gorge to Tekes Waterfall

You'll ride horses for 40 km through Bayankol gorge heading toward Tekes waterfall. The northern side of Central Tien Shan here features dramatic canyons, thick coniferous forests, and wildlife like red deer, ibex, bears, and wolves roaming around. Along the route, you'll pass near several of the region's accessible six-thousanders and five-thousanders. There's a picnic lunch break during the ride, and then you'll camp overnight in tents set up on the river bank.

  4. Day 4

    Tekes Waterfall

Horseback riding continues through Bayankol gorge as you make your way to Tekes Waterfall. While the waterfall itself is modest in size, the sight is really something special, having carved out a deep pool in the rocky slopes over time. You'll first get views from above, then carefully make your way down to the pool itself where you can take a dip in the cold mountain water and appreciate the cool shade. Tents remain your accommodation for another night.

  5. Day 5

    Charyn Canyon to Almaty

The day starts with a car transfer to Charyn Canyon, called the 'Grand Canyon's little brother' by many who visit. This dramatic canyon system stretches approximately 150 km and cuts down to depths reaching 300m, all carved by the Charyn River over thousands of years. The canyon floor actually sits where an ancient ocean called the Tethys once was. You'll have time to walk around and see it on your own before your driver takes you to Almaty where you arrive at your hotel.

A very reliable and excellent driver. He uses a translator for communication. Highly recommended area if you enjoy the natural influences on the ocean floor of the Tethys Sea. Hiking is also possible, but if you're not into hiking, you can also explore with a 4x4. Highly recommended tour. Very rough terrain...

In June 2023 I took TourRadar’s 5 day Golden ring of Zhetysu tour with my husband, our guide was Vladimer. Our days in Kazakhstan were exceptional – the sites were unique and interesting but our trip was mainly so good because Vladimer is an exceptional guide. We visited all the sites as advertised (can’t even rank them – they were all great) and each day was an immense pleasure – mainly because Vladimer is so genuine, acutely customer-focused, and was always providing more. We expected a knowledgeable guide who would transport us safely to each site, but we didn’t anticipate a guide so dedicated to our comfort and enjoyment – for as long as we were awake and interested in doing more. Vladimer is attentive, a good listener, and was sensitive to our specific needs. We’re vegetarian (not easy in Kazakhstan), we were celebrating our 37th anniversary during our tour, we are both naturalists that want to see not only local fauna but also native flora. Vladimir was genuinely excited when he could surprise us with a new plant/animal sighting, create a spectacular and memorable anniversary (the entire day was filled with special moments) and immerse us in the culture of Kazakhstan (food, history, customs, and of course, the people). This tour and Vladimir, ‘hit it out of the park’. We’ve traveled to >70 countries and have experienced adventure in many places – we never expected such a fun undertaking on this trip. We’ll book with Tour Radar again (and request Vladimir) when we schedule our next ‘stans’ trip (or elsewhere). Thanks for a very special time in Kazakhastan!
