Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou
Your journey starts in Marrakech this morning, then you'll drive into the High Atlas Mountains toward the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260m (7,415 ft). The road climbs steadily through changing landscape and scenery. If you're interested, there's time to stop at Telouet Kasbah to walk through the old fortified residence and see its traditional architecture. After that, you'll continue toward Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village built into the hillside with clay buildings that look like they've been there for centuries. The drive gives you a chance to see how the terrain shifts as you descend. You'll spend tonight in Aït Benhaddou itself or in the nearby town of Ouarzazate, depending on where you prefer to settle in.

Aït Benhaddou to Dades or Todra Gorges
Today takes you through the Valley of the Roses and around the Skoura Oasis as you head toward the gorges. From there, you'll choose between two options: Dades Gorges, where steep rock formations rise dramatically from the valley floor, or Todra Gorges, which has narrower canyon walls and better conditions for light hiking and some climbing if you're interested. Both areas have their own appeal depending on what you want to do. The drive between these locations takes a few hours, so you'll have time to settle in once you arrive. You'll overnight in whichever gorge area you've chosen, giving you the evening to rest or take a short walk around the area.

The drive continues eastward toward Erfoud and Rissani, the landscape becoming drier and more open as you move deeper into the desert region. By afternoon, you'll arrive at Merzouga and see the tall sand dunes of Erg Chebbi rising up from the flat ground around them. You'll start a camel trek into the dunes as the light begins to change, heading out to watch the sunset paint the sand different colors. After that, you'll settle into a traditional Berber desert camp for the night, where you can sleep under the open sky with views of stars that go on for miles.

On the way back, you have the choice to stop at Rissani market to see local trading and daily life, or visit fossil workshops in Erfoud where workers cut and polish fossils found in the region. From there, it's a long drive back to Marrakech that'll take around 8 to 10 hours, so starting early helps you get back at a reasonable time.
