Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Kilimanjaro National Park

You'll get picked up after breakfast and driven to Kilimanjaro National Park. While your guide handles registration, the mountain team gets everything prepared. Then you're trekking into the rainforest where ancient trees, ferns, and moss cover the ground. If you're fortunate, black and white colobus monkeys are around. The trek takes 5 to 6 hours before you reach Machame Camp just above the tree line, where you'll have dinner and settle into your tent for the night.

  2. Day 2

    New Shira Camp

Starting early, the path gets steeper as you move into heath and moorland. The open terrain gives you good views of the mountain range stretching out. This day's shorter than Day 1, so you'll arrive at New Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. The camp sits at a nice spot, and when the sun sets, the light hits Kibo's rock face and glacier in a way that makes the whole landscape shift with color.

  3. Day 3

    Barranco Camp

You'll climb about 800 m but camp at roughly the same elevation as last night, which helps your body adjust before the next couple of days get more demanding. The trek starts with a long ascent above Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower. As you go higher, vegetation thins out and the landscape turns to afro-alpine desert. You walk through Barranco Valley with its giant lobelia and senecio plants spread across the terrain. After 6 to 7 hours, you reach Barranco Camp, which is considered the most beautiful camp on the mountain.

Lunch happens in Karanga Valley, then it's a 2 to 3 hour climb to Barafu Camp. Once you arrive, you can rest and have dinner, then get to bed early since tomorrow morning comes before dawn.

    Summit Attempt to Uhuru Peak

Around midnight, after hot tea and a light snack, the summit push begins. You'll climb Kibo's screes by torchlight for 5 to 7 hours, reaching Stella Point at the crater rim (5,730 m) as the sun comes up. Another 1 to 2 hours along the crater ridge takes you to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point. The 360 degree view as daylight arrives is the reward, then you turn around and head down. By midday you're back at Barafu Camp for a warm meal and 1 to 2 hours rest, after which you continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner.

From there you're driven back to Arusha for a hot shower and the rest of your day is open. You can relax by the pool or do whatever you like to celebrate finishing the trek.

The guide was very easy to get on with and very knowledgeable about the animals we saw. He always kept everyone in the group updated on what would be happening each day and where we would be staying. The chef provided excellent meals for both lunches and evening meals. Both helped to make the safari tour a memorable experience.
