  1. Day 1

    Reykjavik

You'll arrive in Reykjavik and get picked up by the included airport shuttle. If your flight lands early enough, there's time to check out the old town's museums and galleries, or head to one of the geothermal pools the city's known for. Plenty of restaurants and cafes around to get a feel for what Reykjavik's about. The evening is free, so you can do as you like before settling in for the night.

    Included Activities

    • Airport shuttle transfer to hotel

    Optional Activities

    • Explore Reykjavik's old town museums and galleries
    • Visit outdoor geothermal pools

  2. Day 2

    Golden Circle & Geysir

After breakfast at your hotel, your guide meets you in the lobby and you'll head out. First stop is Þingvellir National Park where Iceland's old parliament once met by the country's largest lake. From there you continue through the countryside to Geysir with its boiling mud pools and the active Strokkur geyser. Stop at Gullfoss waterfall, which is particularly striking even when frozen in winter. Later you'll taste traditional rye bread baked in natural steam vents at Lake Laugarvatn, then soak in the hot spring at Laugarvatn Fontana. Dinner and overnight in the Hella region.

  3. Day 3

South Coast & Black Sand Beaches

Start with breakfast at your hotel, then drive along the spectacular south coast, one of Iceland's nicest regions in winter. You'll see typical Icelandic farms and horses grazing by the road. The LAVA Center shows a cinema screening about Iceland's volcanic activity. After that you'll stop at both Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, then continue to Reynisfjara with its striking black sand beaches, dramatic basalt formations, and powerful Atlantic waves. Drive through Eldhraun, a massive lava field from an 18th-century eruption that's been mysteriously transformed by winter snow. Dinner and overnight in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur region.

Continue to Jökulsárlón, the country's deepest glacier lagoon at 180 meters, with floating icebergs calving from the glacier. Nearby is Diamond Beach, which is really something with its melting iceberg fragments drifting toward the sea. You'll return to your hotel after a full day. Dinner and overnight in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur region.

Stop at Hveragerði, the unusual 'Village of Greenhouses' in the middle of a geothermal zone where heated greenhouses produce flowers year-round. Pass through the surreal lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula. If you're interested, there's an option to swim in the famous Blue Lagoon with its heated mineral-rich waters surrounded by black lava. Your guide says goodbye at your hotel in Reykjavik. Our guide Bjarni Gaukur pormundsson was fantasstic. He talked about history and science, gave dates for volcano eruptions, told folk tales, showed movies, and was thoroughly knowlegeable and entertaining. I was pleased with the included dinners in Vik and all the sights the tour includes. Suggestions: 1) I wish we were staying at a hotel (not Skuggi) with a restaurant, especially on that first day when we were exhausted from flying overnight. Otherwise Skuggi was fine. 2) We really nneded 3 hours, not just 2, at the airport when needing to get to terminal D.
