Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Sacred Valley Tour

    Your hotel pickup happens at 7:30 a.m., and from there you'll head to Pisac for a 2-hour guided tour of the Inca ruins. The traditional market is next, where you can browse colorful local textiles and get a feel for the region. You'll continue through the Sacred Valley, stopping at Moray to see the circular Inca terraces, then move on to the Maras Salt Mines with its 3,000+ salt pools spread across the hillside. The day wraps up at Ollantaytambo ruins before you transfer to camp at KM 82, which marks the start of the Inca Trail.

  2. Day 2

    Inca Trail Trek Start

    You'll start with coca tea and breakfast, then begin your trek with a 30-minute walk to Salapunku Inca ruin. After that, you'll hike flat terrain for about 1.5 hours until you reach the KM 88 checkpoint, the official start of the Inca Trail proper. From there, you'll head to Llactapata, an important checkpoint site, and continue trekking toward Hatunchaca where lunch happens. A 2.5-hour hike gets you to your camp at Ayapata, where it's quieter and you'll be away from larger trekker groups.

  3. Day 3

    Dead Woman's Pass

    The trail takes you through cloud forest where White-Tailed deer and local plants live. After 2 hours you'll reach Lluchapampa, a good spot to grab supplies if you need them (about 15 minutes). From there, the trek continues to Dead Woman's Pass (Warmiwahuska) at 4,215m/13,828ft, the highest point on your trek with views extending far across the mountains. You'll descend to Pacaymayu for lunch, then climb to Runcuraccay, an archaeological site, before passing through Runcuraccay Pass. The final push takes you to Sayacmarca ruins where you can catch the sunset, then you'll head to camp at Chaquicocha.

  4. Day 4

    Machu Picchu Approach

    After breakfast, you'll trek for 2 hours to Phuyupatamarca and get your first glimpses of Aguas Calientes, Huayna Picchu, and Machu Picchu in the distance. A guided tour of the Phuyupatamarca ruins comes next, then you'll descend through rainforest for 2.5 hours to reach Inti Pata, which offers excellent photo opportunities. Thirty minutes more of hiking takes you to camp at Wihnay Wayna. You'll have lunch there and a guided tour of the Wihnay Wayna ruins, which sits among the more remarkable sites along this route.

  5. Day 5

    Machu Picchu

    You'll wake early and hike about 1 hour to Inti Punku (Sun Gate), the entrance to Machu Picchu, where you can watch the sunrise over the mountains. From there, an easy 45-minute descent takes you to the Machu Picchu Citadel itself, and your guide will point out the best spots for photos. After a short break, you'll get a 2-hour guided tour covering the history and meaning of this site. Later you'll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, board your train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, and finish with a transfer to your hotel in Cusco.
