Itinerary
- Day 1
Nale Moru to Rongai
After breakfast, you're transferred to Rongai to start your climb from the wooden village of Nale Moru. The path takes you through maize and potato fields before entering a pine forest where you might spot Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys with their distinctive white capes. The track climbs gradually through the forest, and by evening you'll reach the first camp at the moorland edge with wide views over the Kenyan plains.

Second Cave to Kikelewa Caves
You'll make your way up to the Second Cave, taking in views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, the route leaves the main trail and heads across moorland toward Mawenzi's jagged peaks. Your camp for the night sits in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves with great views of the surrounding peaks.

Mawenzi Tarn
This day involves a short but steep climb up grassy slopes, which gives you views in all directions and a real feeling of remoteness. As elevation increases, vegetation thins out. You'll reach Mawenzi Tarn, positioned dramatically in a cirque beneath Mawenzi's towering spires. The afternoon is yours to rest and walk around, which helps your body adjust to the altitude.

School Campsite
You cross the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School campsite at the base of the Kibo crater wall. The rest of the day focuses on rest and getting ready for the summit push, with an early night planned.

Gillman's Point to Uhuru Peak to Horombo
Around 1 a.m., your final push begins by torchlight. You'll climb slowly on switchback trails through loose volcanic scree to Gillman's Point on the crater rim, then rest there to watch the sunrise over Mawenzi. If you're feeling strong, there's a three-hour round trip option to Uhuru Peak, getting close to glaciers and ice cliffs. After you head down to Kibo, you continue descending through the night to reach Horombo campsite.

After waking, you make your way down through moorland to Mandara Hut, then keep going to the National Park gate at Marangu. Once the trek wraps up, you're transferred to your hotel in Moshi.
