Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Marrakech to Imlil to Azib n Tamsoult

You'll transfer from Marrakech and head into the Atlas Mountains toward Imlil, which sits at 1740m and serves as the main launch point for mountain treks in the area. The hike takes you up to Tizi-n-Mezzik pass at 2489m, and from there you get good views over the Imlil area and down into the Azzaden valley. After the cook prepares lunch in a juniper forest, you'll walk back down through the valley to reach Azib n Tamsoult, a summer settlement at 2250m. The whole day involves about 5 hours of walking, so it's a moderate introduction to the terrain and altitude.

  2. Day 2

Azib n Tamsoult to Aguelzim Mountain Pass to Toubkal Base Camp

This day is more demanding with a solid climb out of the Azzadene Valley heading toward Toubkal Refuge. You'll pass by Ighouliden waterfalls and cross the Aguelzim Mountain pass at 3,560m, where lunch gives you time to take in views across the entire Atlas range. The refuge itself is simple shared accommodation where you'll bunk with other trekkers also preparing for summit attempts. Plan on about 7 hours of trekking for this leg.

  3. Day 3

Toubkal Summit to Imlil to Marrakech

An early start gets you moving toward Toubkal at 4,167m, North Africa's highest peak. Weather permitting, you'll have views that stretch across the Atlas Range and all the way to the Sahara Desert. After summiting, you face a long descent back through the refuge and down the established trail to Imlil. This is a big day covering roughly 8 to 9 hours of walking total with 900m of climbing and nearly 2,500m back down. You'll typically reach Marrakech around 5:00pm for the transfer back.

Morocco Mountain Guides provided an unforgettable experience doing a 3 day and 2 night trek from Imlil to the top of Toubkal and back. First day was trekking around Imlil with Hassan, who has grown up and lived in Imlil his whole life. He was warm and welcoming and spoke about the history of Imlil. First night I stayed in a beautiful guesthouse in Imlil with a terrace overlooking the whole village and delicious food and generous hospitality from Lahcen. Second day was a gentle day heading up to Refuge Toubkal via shrine at El Chamrouche followed by early night prior to the summit day. We woke up at 4:30am on the third day and ascended to summit of Toubkal in the dark with headtorches on getting there in time for sunrise. One of the most memorable experiences of my life, brought tears to my eyes. We then had great fun charging down back to Imlil. Thank you so much Lahcen, Hassan and rest of the Moroccan Mountain Guide team for an unforgettable experience. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough. I look forward to going back sometime in the future for more High Atlas trekking with Moroccan Mountain Guides

I booked a 5 day solo tour with Ridouane (my guide) and Hassan (our driver). Let me start off my saying that the tour was perfectly smooth thanks to both of them! Sadly I had a cold the whole time but Ridouane went above and beyond to adapt to my needs such as a switching hotels twice during the trip. Besides being adaptable, Ridouane is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable guides I’ve ever hired who (I’m not joking) managed to answer every one of my questions except for one during the whole excursion! And for that one question I can’t even find info online…Hassan drove us quickly and safely across the country and was super friendly as well. I also really liked their choice of hotels! All in all guys, thanks for this trip which I will keep looking back to when I think of Morocco. Hope to see you when I’m back, this time to go north!

    Asked on February 13th, 2022

Can you tell me which departures between March 16th and March 24th have others already booked on them? I am a solo traveller but want to travel with a group to avoid single supplement fee and to meet people. Also, please let me know how cold it will be on the mountain at this time of year (mid- to late-March) and what type of gear I should expect to pack. What size of backpack should I bring and what type of stuff will I be required to carry on me?

Are gators required? 5) what is the average temperature at the summit in mid to late March? 6) is the accommodation heated?
