Took a risk and booked this tour on my own, was obviously apprehensive about going to Morocco on my own but this tour was absolutely amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. My guide Abdul was brilliant, spoke great English and was completely fine to walk at the pace i wanted to and was fine with taking breaks and taking photos for me. He answered all my questions about the Berber people/ way of life and the mountains. The mountains are absolutely beautiful, some of the best views i've ever seen. We also visited the waterfall on the last day which was really cool but did add on an extra 2 hours to the trek (worth it) I have never been so overfed in my life by Hamid the cook! I was served portions for 2 or 3 people with every meal of the nicest Moroccan food imaginable, huge salads, Tagine, cous cous, meatballs and lots of Mint Tea and coffee! The trek itself was easy on the first day but quite challenging for the second and third day, be sure to bring decent walking boots/trainers, some of the terrain is quite tricky and plenty of sleep descents. The accommodation is extremely rustic and simple, be warned there is no toilet or shower in the guesthouse in Tinzert! Bring hand sanitizer or your own soap! The guesthouse in Tizi Oussem is a lot better with a shower and decent toilet facilities. Would definitely do this tour again and strongly thinking about coming back next year to do the Toubkal mountain trek. If i could change one thing it would be to make the first day of trekking longer, we only walked for around 2.5 hours and then had all afternoon and evening with nothing to do in Tinzert.
Atlas Berber Villages Hike 3 Days & 2 Nights - S

Our 2-day Toubkal trek was a unique adventure for us. We were picked up from our hotel in Marrakech and headed to Imlil, through to the Azzaden Valley and the Tamsoult Refuge. Everything was easy and well organized. The staff at Imlil was so welcoming and accommodating. We loved the experience we had there, including the delicious food they gave us. While the trek was challenging, our tour guide chose the pace of the slowest person. We had the best scenery as we trekked through the Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountain. Besides we enjoyed the beauty of waterfalls, Azzaden valley and other landscapes. The Berber guides and mules made this trek a true Moroccan adventure!

Morocco Mountain Guides provided an unforgettable experience doing a 3 day and 2 night trek from Imlil to the top of Toubkal and back. First day was trekking around Imlil with Hassan, who has grown up and lived in Imlil his whole life. He was warm and welcoming and spoke about the history of Imlil. First night I stayed in a beautiful guesthouse in Imlil with a terrace overlooking the whole village and delicious food and generous hospitality from Lahcen. Second day was a gentle day heading up to Refuge Toubkal via shrine at El Chamrouche followed by early night prior to the summit day. We woke up at 4:30am on the third day and ascended to summit of Toubkal in the dark with headtorches on getting there in time for sunrise. One of the most memorable experiences of my life, brought tears to my eyes. We then had great fun charging down back to Imlil. Thank you so much Lahcen, Hassan and rest of the Moroccan Mountain Guide team for an unforgettable experience. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough. I look forward to going back sometime in the future for more High Atlas trekking with Moroccan Mountain Guides

Best time to visit Mount Toubkal
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter on Toubkal transforms into something totally different. The 3-day direct ascent works really well with our small groups of 4-8 people, and we provide proper winter gear along with experienced high-altitude guides. The mountain refuges are pretty basic but they're exactly what you need in winter conditions. Our travelers tell us how much they appreciate the hot, filling traditional meals after a day in the cold. We keep the routes flexible too - if the weather turns, we can switch to alternative valley paths that still give you that winter mountain experience.

- Spring 2026
Spring's perfect for climbing Toubkal and you can really take your time with our 6-day valley routes. You'll see walnut trees coming into bloom while you're getting used to the altitude. The 4-day trips strike a nice balance - you get proper summit preparation plus time to explore places like Jardin Secret and also Bahia Palace back in Marrakech. Our travelers love learning local cooking in Marrakech and staying in traditional Berber homes. Most people choose the mountain refuges and guesthouses, though some tours offer camping under those clear spring skies.

- Summer 2026
Summer sees more people reach the summit than any other season, with different ways to tackle the climb. The 7-day route gives you proper time in Aroumd village - our clients consistently say this makes all the difference. If you're used to altitude, the 3-day direct route might suit you better. Summer lets you sleep out on guesthouse terraces under the stars, with the refuge providing shelter higher up. The guides plan around the heat, often starting before dawn so you catch sunrise spreading across the Atlas mountains.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Autumn brings better visibility and cooler hiking weather, making it great for photos. While the 3-day direct routes work well, many people go for 5-day trips to explore quieter valleys too. The autumn light really brings out the mountain scenery and the trails are more peaceful. You might learn to make traditional bread in Imlil, visit Sidi Chamarouch shrine or share meals with local families. The mountain refuges are quieter too, giving you more chances to chat with fellow hikers and also local guides. Based on what our travelers tell us, Intrepid stands out for Moroccan treks - they're organized, fairly priced and their guides Lahcen and Mo really know their routes and local culture. Trek in Morocco is another solid choice; Abdul gets lots of praise from clients who enjoy his attentive style and the company's home-cooked meals along the trail. View Morocco delivers good experiences overall, though you should know that some guests mention basic sleeping arrangements at higher camps and occasional delays in email responses. Their routes are solid but communication could be smoother. If you're into mountain biking rather than hiking, MTB Morocco runs a tight operation. They maintain their bikes well, provide quality gear and can adjust routes based on your riding level. Our cyclists particularly like how they handle everything from beginner trails to technical single-track descents. Best to book any of these several months ahead, especially for spring treks between March and May when conditions are ideal and groups fill up quickly. The companies all handle logistics like mule support for bags, camping gear and food prep - letting you focus on the walking or riding.

Is a guide required to climb Mount Toubkal?
You'll definitely need a local Berber guide for climbing Toubkal - it's not just recommended, it's mandatory. This requirement really helps keep climbers safe while supporting the local community at the same time. You can find guide services through various tour operators and prices change depending on your group size and the guide's experience level. Nancy from Sydney recently climbed with Igdem Lahcen & Team and had a great experience with their guides.
How fit do I need to be to climb Mount Toubkal?
While Toubkal isn't super technical, you'll want to be in good shape before taking this on. You're looking at several hours of hiking each day at high altitudes which can be pretty demanding on your body. Getting some regular cardio exercise before your trip is key and you might want to do some practice hikes to get acclimatized in the days leading up to your climb. Nancy who climbed with Igdem Lahcen & Team found the mountain terrain quite challenging especially dealing with the altitude on day two.
What's the best time of year to climb Mount Toubkal?
Spring around April-May or fall during September-October tend to be your sweet spots for climbing Toubkal. Summer gets seriously hot while winter brings snow and ice that'll require extra gear and experience. If you're thinking about December expect those summit temperatures to be absolutely freezing. The 4 Days Toubkal Mountain Trek from Marrakesh really highlights just how challenging those winter conditions can get.
