Cairns to Atherton Tableland
Head out from Cairns and wind your way up into the Atherton Tableland along the Kuranda Range road with rainforest all around. You'll spend time at Historic Village Herberton, which is a recreated tin mining town with over 50 restored buildings full of antiques and old memorabilia. There's plenty to see at your own pace here, including shops, a pub, grocer, school and garage. Grab a coffee at the Bakerville Tearooms and take your time looking around.

- Day 2
Mount Surprise to Georgetown
Early morning start as you board the 1960s Savannahlander train heading toward Mount Surprise and Einasleigh in the Wet Tropics. At Einasleigh you'll have a break to grab a cold drink at the pub or visit Copperfield Gorge, which features ancient lava flow remains from an extinct volcano. The train then heads northwest through Forsayth and on to the quiet village of Georgetown, giving you time to take in the landscape along the way.

- Day 3
Croydon to Karumba
Today you're traveling through the Gulf Savannah region, starting at Lake Belmore, the biggest water body around here stocked with fish. From there head to Normanton, a quirky town where you can photograph the famous Purple Pub, the historic Burns Philp General Store, and a replica of Krys the 8.63 metre crocodile. Later you'll reach Karumba at the mouth of the Norman River on the Gulf of Carpentaria for a sunset cruise where you'll spot birdlife.

Karumba
Check out the unique marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Carpentaria, which is a rare shallow sea sitting on top of a continent. Visit the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre and Hatchery to learn about barramundi history, their lifecycle and behaviour, the only place worldwide breeding and hatching them. After that, head to Point Sunset for happy hour and some relaxation as the day winds down.

Mutton Hole Wetlands
Explore the Far North Queensland outback and learn about the region's tough history. Stop at Campsite 119, the northernmost post of the 1861 Burke and Wills expedition, then head to Mutton Hole Wetlands Regional Park, part of Queensland's largest continuous wetland. You'll have time here for crocodile and bird watching, with plenty of opportunity to see both if you're patient.

Normanton to Cobbold Gorge via Historic Gulflander Train
Board the historic Gulflander RM93 train at Normanton's Victorian-era railway station for a scenic journey through savannah landscape. The train crosses the Norman River and passes through Critters Camp and Black Bull Siding before reaching Croydon, an old gold mining town. You'll stop at Georgetown and Forsayth on your way to Cobbold Gorge. Locals say it travels from nowhere to nowhere, but it's definitely fun.

Cobbold Gorge
Visit Cobbold Gorge, an ancient geological formation with narrow striated sandstone and 10 metre high cliffs. Water carved through 135 million year old sandstone here around 10,000 years ago to create this landscape. Take a cruise through the gorge where you'll hear mainly wind, wildlife and the quiet boat engine, with hardly any other sounds interrupting the experience.

Forsayth to Talaroo Hot Springs and Undara
Sleep in today since there's no pressure to get moving early. Make a quick stop at Forsayth before heading to Talaroo Hot Springs, one of the Outback's most extraordinary geological sites. You'll experience Aboriginal hospitality from the Ewamian people, have lunch, then go on a guided tour learning about this special place before taking a dip in the hot springs. After that, head to your accommodation at Undara.

- Day 9
Undara Lava Tubes to Cairns
After breakfast in the bush, an experienced Savannah Guide takes you through the world's largest and most accessible lava tube system. The Undara Lava Tubes were created by the longest lava flow from a single volcano, forming massive caves and a surreal underground world. On the drive back over the Tropical Tablelands you'll pass the wind turbines at Ravenshoe and stop at the magnificent Curtain Fig Tree before returning to Cairns.
