What people love about touring Kruger National Park solo
- Kruger National Park & Panorama Route Safari - 3 days
Jakes did an excellent job of showing us the beauty of the South African county side and also relaying a lot of the history of the country as well. He has done this tour many times as knows all the interesting and unique places. He is also very knowledgeable about the wild animals of South Africa and was able to go to spots in Kruger where he has seen them in the past. I couldn't have asked for more from him.
- Kruger, Falls & Zimbabwe: Mineral Pools & National Parks
Very good tour - lots of driving but you can see the country and its people (Zimbabwe-side) and nice landscape (South Africa-side). The Matopos park in Zimbabwe is just amazing with the local guides - THE highlight of the tour!
- Kruger & Coast (5 destinations)
This trip was absolutely incredible! I stared in JNB to Durban, just the 9 days, and was a solo traveller from Ireland. It was such a good trip that despite my bag being lost on the flight and having nothing for 4 days I still had the time of my life. First of all, they did an amazing job in preparation to us arriving at pairing people into rooms and really got it spot on. I was put in with an Australian girl and we literally became the best of friends and inseparable after one day, so much so that Lolly, one of our guides, had thought we knew each other beforehand. But everyone got on so well and were so close after a few days too and everyone was amazing at offering to lend me clothes and such seeing as my bag had gone missing with the airline. There are lots of early starts but they are definitely worth it! Just listen to your guides as they are trying to give you the best experience they can possibly give you. There are so many highlights from this trip, especially the Zululand community visit which was such a huge eye opener and experience, or the Hlane camp which was incredible and we all sat down beside the wateringhole and had a few drinks that night after our bush walk in the safari. The views and scenery are incredible, make sure you have loads of storage on your phone or camera! I had never seriously camped before, and neither had my tent mate, but it was all so fun and we were experts by the end of it. You get what you sign up for, its a real African experience so don't complain!! (one woman on our trip was incredibly rude to both our guides all the time, and complained about having to put her tent down in the morning, don't know what she expected, I felt so so sorry for both Onary and Lolly as they were both so so amazing the whole trip and were doing their best and took incredible care of us and definitely did not deserve any complaints or rudeness, but I suppose every group has one). When it comes to the two guides, Onary and Lolly, I don't know where to begin. absolute gentlemen. Onary cooked breakfast and Dinner for us and every meal was an absolute feast! He even cooked us soup for starters one night which was the best soup I've tasted in my life. He went to such a huge effort to look after us, as did Lolly who drove us everywhere. Both guys were so so knowledgeable and Onary gave us a guided tour talk whenever we came across a sightseeing spot or an animal, he knew absolutely everything and I learned so much. I would highly advise talking to them as you will learn an incredible amount about Africa. The truck is incredibly equipped, with charging USB points all along and a cooler in the back for the supplied water and any snacks or drinks we want to keep cold. The Kruger campsites were fantastic. We camped as close to the facilities as possible in each campsite and the Kruger and St. Lucia bathrooms were incredibly modern and clean with hot water and showers. The Mozambique experience was amazing. Just remember enough to pay for your visa! I think on our trip it was 50 US dollars or 750 south African rand, but it changes all the time so make sure to bring more. The beach here was like a postcard, and I'd highly recommend the beach bar which was really good fun. This tour exceeded all my expectations, with an excellent itinerary which had so many included activities and the guides tried to help us get the best possible experience in Africa. I'd highly recommend anyone thinking of going to definitely go, it won't disappoint. Just remember you're in Africa, it's not 5 star luxury, the guides are doing their absolute best to please everyone and as long as you go with an open mind and ready to enjoy yourself and have fun with all the other travellers on this trip you'll enjoy this tour too.
What our customers ask about Kruger National Park Tours for Solo Travelers
What's the best time of year for solo travelers to visit Kruger National Park?
The dry winter season from May to September provides the best conditions for solo travel to Kruger. Animals gather near water sources making wildlife viewing easier and the malaria risk drops significantly during these months. Properties like Simbavati George Camp and Kruger Adventure Lodge create natural opportunities to meet other travelers through shared dinners and evening programs. The weather stays pleasant with daytime temperatures around 25°C/77°F which makes game drives at locations like Blyde River Canyon comfortable.
How social are the guided group tours in Kruger National Park for solo travelers?
Group tours naturally create connections between travelers through shared experiences. At lodges like Tremisana Game Lodge travelers come together for Bush BBQs at the Marula Tree Boma and afternoon game drives. The atmosphere encourages conversation and friendship. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The group was small only 11 participants from all ages and stages of life... everyone got on so well and were so close after a few days."
What type of accommodations can solo travelers expect in Kruger?
Places to stay range from standard lodge rooms to unique sleeping arrangements. Tremisana Game Lodge provides air-conditioned chalets with private bathrooms while Marc's Treehouse Lodge offers elevated wooden houses. Each option balances comfort with the safari experience. According to a TourRadar traveler: "Staying in the treehouse at Marc's was a highlight - it was comfortable while still feeling adventurous and the communal areas were great for meeting other travelers."
How much wildlife interaction can I expect on a guided Kruger tour?
Most tours schedule 2-3 daily game drives in areas known for wildlife like Orpen gate. The vehicles get close enough for good viewing while maintaining safe distances. One TourRadar traveler reported: "Our expert guide helped us spot over 30 different species including lions elephants and even a leopard during our sunset drive. The shared excitement of these sightings really brought our group together."
Do I have to pay a single supplement for Kruger National Park tours as a solo traveler?
Single room fees typically cost between USD 200-400. Some companies like Viva Safaris offer roommate matching at places like Tremisana Game Lodge to help travelers avoid extra charges. A TourRadar guest commented: "I chose to share a room at the lodge and ended up making a great friend while saving on costs."
