What people love about Self-Guided Tours in Nordic / Scandinavia
- 12 Days Self-drive | Everything you must see in Iceland Ring Road Tour
I was extremely happy with the responsiveness of the tour company and Lyn in particular. Essentially, the company was available to assist literally late into the eve. Provided you take the 12-day itinerary as suggestions of places to see vice a checklist to accomplish, you will not be disappointed. Several of the overnight accommodations were not up to my standards but none were bad. I would happily recommend this tour and give it my stamp of approval by saying I wish it was two days longer!4
- 6-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided
Do The North is a trip we'll never forget. The scenery, the weather, the equipment, the organisation, the food; it was all perfect. Thomas and his team were so helpful from the first email to picking us up after the trip. Forget any worries you have about fitness, kayaking ability or surviving for 6 days... just do it!
- 8-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided
My brother and I (yeah it can be done, just a few arguments) did a 7 night trip with Do the North. St Anna and the rest of the Ostergotland archipelago is incredibly scenic, quiet, cut off from the world (in a good way): there's not much more I can say about it to be honest, that hasn't been said already, about how great it is. We went during the peak summer season, and we didn't experience rain once. The sun rises about 04h30 and sets about 22h00, but it only really gets dark after 23h00 Thomas, who runs DtN, has a pretty slick operation. Everything's pre-ordered (really plan your meals, that way you won't overspend on dinner; buy loads of snacks and drinks) and packed up ready for you. You get picked up from Norrkoping (make sure you book flights so that you have at least a day there in the regenerated industrial town) and taken to the kayaks and your gear. Thomas gives you really useful 101s in navigation and packing the kayak (he seems to pack it perfectly though, you'll never do it as quick or easy in reality), and then you set off. You can go wherever you want at whatever pace you want, and you have a phone to keep in contact with DtN if you need to -- they send daily weather reports too. The equipment's genuinely top Swedish quality (Hilleberg, Haglofs, Trangia ...), and it's clear a lot of care's gone into the tour. Thomas and Sam seemed to work around the clock, to pick people up, drop them off, get you insect repellent if you forgot it etc. It really shows, and it was worth the money.
What our customers ask about Self-Guided Tours in Nordic / Scandinavia
What's the best time of year to take a self-guided tour in Nordic/Scandinavia?
Summer months from June through September provide the most reliable conditions for Nordic self-guided tours with long daylight hours and mild temperatures. The water temperature peaks in August making it an ideal time for activities like kayaking in Sweden's Saint Anna Archipelago. Winter brings its own opportunities especially in Iceland where travelers can spot the Northern Lights though driving requires extra preparation. Local data shows Saint Anna experiences some of Sweden's highest number of sunny days and warmest sea temperatures.
What kind of vehicle do I need for a self-drive tour in Iceland during winter months?
Winter driving in Iceland from November to March requires a 4x4 vehicle to handle snow and ice conditions safely. Popular options include the Skoda Octavia Combi 4x4 automatic or Toyota Landcruiser 4x4 for smaller groups. Larger parties often opt for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4. These vehicles come equipped with winter tires and safety features necessary for Iceland's winter road conditions.
What level of accommodation can I expect on a self-guided Nordic tour?
Self-guided Nordic tours typically feature 3-star hotels that offer private bathrooms and include breakfast. Along Iceland's Ring Road travelers might stay at properties like Hotel Hamar near Borgarnes or Fosshotel Nupar in the south. These accommodations focus on comfort and practicality while providing convenient access to major attractions.
What are the must-see highlights typically included in self-guided Nordic tours?
Nordic self-guided itineraries often feature Norway's fjords Sweden's Gamla Stan district and Finland's Santa Claus Village. Transportation experiences like the Flåm Railway rides add to the journey. Cultural stops usually include Stockholm's Vasa Museum Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens and overnight stays at historical properties such as the Kviknes Hotel overlooking Sognefjord.
How far in advance should I book a self-guided Nordic tour?
For optimal planning book Nordic self-guided tours 3-6 months ahead particularly for summer travel between June and August. Booking data shows most travelers secure their trips 90-196 days in advance. Special experiences like kayaking in Sweden's Saint Anna Archipelago tend to fill quickly during peak season making early reservation essential.
