What people love about Christmas & New Year Tours in Greece
- Charming Greece Tour - 7 days
Overall the tour was good but I’m not sure I would do it again. We thought it would be more of a tour group rather than just signing us up for excursions we had already found before signing up for the tour and booking a couple hotel rooms. The tour guide on 4 day over night excursion, Cassandra was fantastic, however, our tour ended up being bi-lingual and it took away from the information she could’ve provided us with as she had to say two different things. It took time away from both groups as we waited to hear more where if it was a single group, even if it was smaller would’ve provided more time to see the sights. As these were excursions and anyone could sign up it took away the group factor. These excursions allowed people to book separate hotels which took away from getting to know others as a group. Was a good tour but I would probably book my own next time unless it became an actual group tour.
- Absolutely Greek
Eskapas customer service exceeded our expectations. Our intended small group tour (Absolute Greek) unfortunately did not materialize because of the Greek National Holiday and we were told that their local partners were not operational around those days. Eskapas re arranged our itinerary so we could still enjoy most of what we wanted to do and see. We ended up joining bigger groups in shorter trips and missing out on Olympia. Regardless of the mishap we still had an amazing time. We recommend Eskapas for their excellent customer service: quick, easy, and reliable communication. Thank you!
- Mystical Mainland | Semi-Private 7-Day Guided Tour
The mainland mystery tour offers a unique experience of the mainland ranging from visits to the Acropolis to small monasteries in the mountains.. Given that you’re accompanied by two local guides with extensive experience in all regions of Greece, you quickly understand and experience the culture and history of Greece. One of the guides had a Masters in European history , and was able to make ancient history come alive and become relevant to our current times. The accommodations and meals were excellent. Each hotel offered a different experience from a city hotel near the Acropolis to small mountainous resorts high in the hills. Each request whether it was for type of food, wine or cultural experience was enthusiastically received and fulfilled. After having this tour I feel I have a cultural and historical understanding of Greece that could be obtained no other way. The personalized attention of the tour guides was unsurpassed. I recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to become immersed in Greek culture, ancient and modern and experience the beauty of the mountainous region and small towns that few visitors will ever see, all surrounded by the comfort and welcoming experience created by the guides.
What our customers ask about Christmas & New Year Tours in Greece
Are archaeological sites and museums open during Christmas & New Year?
The majority of Greece's significant archaeological sites and museums remain accessible throughout the holiday season though they operate on abbreviated winter schedules. The Acropolis Museum and key historical sites welcome visitors with some closing earlier than usual. Notable institutions like the Athens Archaeological Museum and Delphi Museum often feature special holiday exhibitions that highlight seasonal aspects of Greek culture. The winter morning light creates excellent conditions for visiting outdoor sites like the Acropolis and Ancient Olympia. Several accommodations including the Amalia hotel chain provide convenient access to these cultural landmarks.
What's the typical weather like during Christmas & New Year in Greece?
Winter in Greece brings mild Mediterranean conditions with Athens temperatures ranging from 12-15°C (54-59°F) during daylight hours and dropping to 7-10°C (45-50°F) after dark. The mountainous region of Meteora sees colder temperatures and occasional snowfall while coastal areas like Santorini maintain milder conditions around 15°C (59°F). Visitors should pack versatile clothing that can be layered especially for evening activities. The Amalia Hotel Delphi offers guests comfortable rooms with clear winter vistas across the landscape.
Which Greek destinations are best for Christmas & New Year celebrations?
Athens stands out for its central celebrations and the decorated Syntagma Square while Thessaloniki draws visitors to its lit-up waterfront and holiday markets. Meteora offers a more contemplative experience with its monastery celebrations. The Athens Avenue Hotel and Grand Meteora Hotel serve as well-positioned bases for holiday activities. For those seeking a different perspective Santorini provides a peaceful holiday setting away from larger crowds.
What cultural and religious traditions can I experience during Greek Christmas & New Year?
Greek holiday traditions include the Epiphany water blessing ceremony on January 6 traditional carol singing known as "kalanda" and New Year's Eve festivities featuring Acropolis fireworks displays. Visitors can join holiday services at significant religious sites from Athens' Metropolitan Cathedral to Meteora's monasteries. These celebrations offer authentic glimpses into Greek cultural practices that have endured for generations.
How far in advance should I book a Christmas & New Year tour in Greece?
Securing arrangements 6-8 months before travel is advisable for holiday season visits to Greece. Popular accommodations like the El Greco Resort in Santorini and Amalia Hotel in Delphi fill quickly during this peak period. Air travel costs tend to rise substantially as the holiday season approaches. Early planning helps ensure both better rates and wider choice of accommodations.
What special holiday dining experiences are available during Christmas & New Year?
Holiday meals in Greece center around traditional festive dishes including christopsomo (Christmas bread) roast lamb and vasilopita. Many establishments from the Splendour Resort in Santorini to the Athenaeum Grand Hotel in Athens create special holiday menus. Local tavernas enhance their usual offerings with seasonal specialties that showcase Greek holiday customs and regional ingredients.
