Botswana Overland Tour Reviews
- Botswana Safari
The Absolute Africa 6 day safari was quite an adventure. My wife and I were, to be honest, a little daunted by the prospect of camping and bush camping but due to the efforts of guide Joe, driver Emmaus(EMI) and especially a very welcoming group of travellers, despite our ages of 61 and 66, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The tents were durable and easy to erect, the sleeping mats reasonably comfortable and the briefings each night informative. Chobe NP and the Okavango Delta were clear highlights with game drives and cruises providing excellent opportunities to observe the abundant wildlife. The mokoro trips in the delta were an absolute highlight. Big 5 and ‘Pretty 5’ all spotted repeatedly. We believe there should have been more insight offered to the nature of the safari in terms of joining a group briefly who had already been travelling together for 50+ days and whilst it was made clear we would be helping with meals, packing etc. it was not clear in our package we would be actually shopping, cooking, cleaning the bus, packing, doing ‘security’ etc. and a cook would have been an important and welcome addition. To be fair to our crew the groups functioned really efficiently, we have heard that is not always the case. We also believe the group size was too large for best outcomes. In short, due to the personnel and the itinerary, it was a terrific and memorable safari.

What our customers ask about Botswana Overland Tours
When is the best time to take an Overland Truck tour in Botswana?
The most favorable period for Overland Truck tours in Botswana runs during the dry winter months from July to October. During this time animals gather near water sources like the Chobe River and Okavango Delta making wildlife viewing more predictable. The Savuti area offers frequent predator sightings and the Moremi Game Reserve consistently delivers strong wildlife encounters. For travelers seeking a quieter experience April to June provides good viewing conditions with fewer tourists and green landscapes. Booking records show August and October as the most sought-after months for these adventures.
What are the must-see highlights during a Botswana Overland Truck tour?
Essential stops on Botswana's Overland routes include gliding through the Okavango Delta in traditional mokoro canoes exploring Chobe National Park's large elephant populations and observing endangered rhinos at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Evening river cruises on the Chobe offer prime wildlife viewing. The Elephant Sands Lodge near Nata provides up-close encounters with elephants drinking from nearby waterholes. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The Okavango delta was out of this world great to see so many animals in their natural habitat and the locals were so friendly and helpful with the mokoro rides."
How long are the driving days on Botswana Overland Truck tours?
Travel times between destinations typically range from 5-7 hours on rough terrain. The route from Maun to Nata takes approximately 10 hours while the Victoria Falls to Chobe segment requires about 3 hours. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Need to expect long days bumpy roads and lots of heat. Despite this most clients feel that the diversity of the African landscape culture and wildlife are well worth the experience."
What type of accommodation can I expect on a Botswana Overland Truck tour?
Accommodations blend camping and lodge stays throughout the journey. Nights are spent in two-person canvas dome tents with provided mattresses at established sites like Thebe River Lodge in Kasane or Planet Baobab near Gweta. The Okavango Delta portion often involves basic bush camping without facilities. Lodge upgrades are available on select routes. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned: "Despite was my first time camping I slept perfect tents are very comfortable and the camping sites were very clean with showers with hot water."
What optional activities are available during Botswana Overland Truck tours?
Additional experiences include aerial tours over the Okavango Delta (starting at USD 250) extra game drives in Chobe National Park (USD 95) nighttime wildlife viewing (USD 130) local community visits and Victoria Falls activities such as rafting expeditions (USD 150) or helicopter tours. A TourRadar traveler recommended: "Take advantage of the optional tours offered. A fly over tour of the delta shows you how vast and populated it is in a way that is difficult to comprehend from the ground."
How many travelers typically join a Botswana Overland Truck tour?
Groups usually consist of 12-16 travelers riding in specially designed safari vehicles. This size creates a social atmosphere while maintaining comfort during wildlife viewing in areas like Moremi and Chobe. Dedicated 4x4 vehicles handle specific segments including Okavango Delta and Savuti explorations. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The groups functioned really efficiently though smaller groups can sometimes provide a more intimate safari experience."
