What people love about Gorilla Trekking Tours in Africa
- Nairobi To Kigali (13 Days) Gorillas & Gameparks
I travelled with a friend of mine and the tour was an amazing experience. The guide was very experienced and attentive! They gave us all the time to explore and it was a well paced trip! I would highly recommend the tour with Oasis Overland, a great way to see this part of amazing Africa!
- The Absolute Safari
Down to earth company whose hearts really are in Africa and everything they do there. Fantastic trip, 77 days of good times - chance of a lifetime that EVERYONE should experience.
- Nairobi To Johannesburg (94 Days)
Amazing experience! Before arriving, I was nervous about what overlanding would be like, especially as someone who had never camped before. It was exactly what I expected it would be and the staff did a great job being their for anything you could possibly need. They clearly explained daily/weekly itinerary, how to put up your tent, what to buy, where to eat, what to see etc. And they will even fix your flip flop if it breaks! Overlanding as a type of travel may not be for everyone, every overlanding company drives longs days and does some camping. But if you want to slow down, see the land and meet really cool people I couldn't recommend Oasis more. The best part was that all of the staff are incredibly helpful, from answering questions online prior to my trip, to their caring CEO, to my amazing driver and group leader. I did 93 in africa and I've already booked another trip on the silk road. Can't wait to be back!
What our customers ask about Gorilla Trekking Tours & Trips in Africa
When is the best time to go gorilla trekking in Africa?
Uganda and Rwanda's dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the most favorable conditions for gorilla trekking. The forest paths are firmer and easier to navigate during these months. A TourRadar traveler shares: "We went in November which had some rain but actually made the forest incredibly lush and photogenic. The gorillas are viewable year-round." While Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Volcanoes National Park welcome visitors throughout the year the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November can make hiking more difficult.
What are the accommodation options available during gorilla trekking tours?
The lodging choices span from basic camping sites to high-end lodges with destinations like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Bwindi and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge in Rwanda leading the luxury segment. A TourRadar traveler notes: "We stayed at Buhoma Lodge which offered incredible forest views and was perfectly located for early morning trek starts. The staff were amazing and the rooms comfortable despite the remote location." Tour packages typically blend different accommodation types with better quality lodging reserved for gorilla trekking days.
What kind of accommodation can I expect on a gorilla trekking tour?
Your stays will range from upscale lodges to safari-style camps. Bwindi offers the elegant Nkurungo Bwindi Lodge with forest panoramas while Lake Bunyonyi features the more modest Bunyonyi Overland Resort. In Kampala Red Chilli Hideaway serves as a reliable base camp. According to a TourRadar traveler: "the mix of accommodation styles really enhanced the experience - from the luxurious Fort Murchison Lodge to the authentic camping experiences at Queen Elizabeth National Park."
What permits are required for gorilla trekking and how much do they cost?
Securing gorilla trekking permits is essential and requires advance booking. Current rates stand at USD 825 for Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park including an expert guide and one hour of gorilla observation. A TourRadar traveler shared: "Though expensive the permit was worth every penny - our expert guides at Bwindi made sure we had an unforgettable hour with these magnificent creatures." Additional transportation costs to trekking sites range from USD 53-120 based on group size.
What wildlife besides gorillas can I expect to see on these tours?
The parks offer rich wildlife encounters beyond gorilla viewing. Queen Elizabeth National Park houses chimpanzees elephants lions and hundreds of bird species. Kyambura Gorge specializes in chimpanzee tracking experiences. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Beyond the amazing gorilla encounter at Bwindi we saw countless species at Fort Murchison including hippos crocodiles and rare birds along the Nile." Many itineraries include Murchison Falls National Park known for Big Five sightings.
How many days should I plan for a gorilla trekking tour?
Most comprehensive tours span 10-14 days allowing time to explore key destinations. The "Grand East African Safari" allocates 3-4 days at Lake Bunyonyi for gorilla encounters plus time at Queen Elizabeth National Park for chimpanzee viewing. One TourRadar traveler recommends: "We spent 12 days total starting at Fort Murchison Lodge and ending at Red Chilli Hideaway in Kampala which felt perfect for experiencing everything without rushing."
